Medical Diagnoses Over the Internet Workshop "Telemedicine - Present and Future" at the EXPO
Modern information technology spares superfluous ways: students can already complete a large share of their studies through the Internet without setting foot in the library or classroom. For the field of medicine, the innovative use of electronic media and communication networks brings with it enormous opportunities. Today, doctors, pharmacists, visiting nurses and other members of the medical profession can already search numerous specialized databases and converse with colleagues around the world. In the same way, patients can find information about illnesses and support groups.
"Physical presence will be increasingly replaced by 'telepresence'", forecasts Prof. José L. Encarnação, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) in Darmstadt. The new simulation methods developed at the institute produce computer generated, virtual worlds which in the future will support doctors in their training, further education as well as practically. Surgeons of the future will be able to, for example, forward a three dimensional image of a patient's organ to a colleague for examination during an operation. That could save lives.
On the road to telediagnosis and online consultation, however, there are several obstacles which must be cleared: patient data must be sufficiently secured, efficient databases must be created, costs must be reduced and the networks' transfer capacities must be expanded. In order to promote the necessary exchange of knowledge and experience in this field, Computer Graphics Center, together with the Portuguese University of Aveiro, is organizing the
"Telemedicine - Present and Future" Workshop
to be held on September 29, 2000 at the EXPO in Hannover. Under the sponsorship of the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology, experts from around the world can share their experiences with and results from telemedicine projects at the event. Participants of the international workshop will receive information on the field of telemedicine's newest technological developments and trends, its future challenges, market potential or legal aspects. Live presentations of telemedical systems and equipment currently in use will complement the program.

The international network of Computer Graphics (INI-GraphicsNet) consists of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD), the Computer Graphics Center (ZGDV), both situated in Darmstadt and Rostock and the Darmstadt University of Technology Department of Computer Science Interactive Graphics Systems Group (GRIS). The network comprises of further institutions such as the Fraunhofer Application Center for Computer Graphics in Chemistry and Pharmaceutics (AGC) situated in Frankfurt, the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics (CRCG) in Providence, Rhode Island, the Fraunhofer Centre for Advanced Media Technology (CAMTech), Singapore and the Centro de Computação Grafica (CCG) in Coimbra, Portugal.
It employs a staff of over 300 and more than 450 assistant researchers at six locations. With a budget of 70 million DM it is the major research alliance in the field of computer graphics world-wide.
