Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), University Hospital Freiburg, Department of Environmental Health Sciences and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) organise the 1st international conference on Sustainable Pharmacy on April 24 and 25, 2008, in Osnabrück, Germany.
Pharmaceuticals are indispensable for a high quality of life. Their use however also has a downside. In recent years a huge amount of data has been collected demonstrating the widespread occurrence of a variety of active drug ingredients in the aquatic environment and sporadically even in drinking water. Being only insufficiently eliminated in conventional sewage treatment, there is growing evidence that the substances and their metabolites have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms on both the individual and the population level. Given the demonstrated environmental relevance of pharmaceuticals sustainable solution strategies increasingly gain importance.
Green Chemistry has convincingly shown that it is mandatory to examine the environmental relevance of all phases of a chemical's life cycle. Sustainable Pharmacy is a new vision that aims to take up the lessons learnt from Green Chemistry. In a broader strategic perspective Sustainable Pharmacy would not only foster the resource efficient development of pharmaceuticals which are optimised for both therapeutic efficacy and degradability in the environment. It would also provide support for the sustainable use of the products and give impetus for the implementation of innovative sanitation concepts in order to reduce emissions already at the source.
The conference "Sustainable Pharmacy: Strategies and Perspectives for Development, Use and Emission Management of Pharmaceuticals" will for the first time convene the international state of research and discussion in Sustainable Pharmacy. Renowed experts from science and practice will share their knowledge in order to come from a problem perspective to a solution perspective. Speakers at the conference will be among others:
John Sumpter (Brunel University, UK), David Taylor (Head of Global Environmental Strategy, AstraZeneca, UK), Michaela Schmitz (German Association of Energy and Water Industries, Germany), James Clark (Green Chemistry Network, UK), Peter Dunn (Head of Green Pharmacy, Pfizer Global R&D, UK), Klaus Kümmerer (University Hospital Freiburg), Åke Wennmalm (Stockholm County Council, Sweden) Giampaolo Velo (University of Verona, Italy), Susanne Schmitz (Federal Environment Agency, Germany),Tove Larsen (EAWAG, Schwitzerland).
The conference equally addresses to scientists from all relevant disciplines and practitioners from the fields of pharmaceutical industry, health care, water management and public authorities.
