At this year's top trade fair for information and communications technology, Fraunhofer IESE will focus its presentations on processes for effort-optimized development of control software in complex agricultural and construction machinery. At the booth of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in hall 9, booth B38, a model excavator will serve as an example which visitors to the fair can use to jump into action themselves and which will visually demonstrate system design and analysis for the software components used for implementing complex functions.
Thus, software can be used to set the excavator's radius of activity in such a way that the boom can only be moved within the given area of work. Especially considering the complexity of modern commercial vehicles, such kinds of safety systems can only be realized via software and often also affect safety-critical components, such as the brakes.
Modern commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, agricultural and construction machinery are rolling high-tech products in which complex controls, comfortable operation, and vehicle safety would not be possible without using software in the electronic control devices. "Low production numbers, a large number of variants, and sophisticated mechatronics call for an efficient development process that delivers a product with measurably high reliability", says IESE Project Manager Ralf Kalmar. "The requirements are higher in this area than for private vehicles." In all this, the dependency of software is not visible at first glance: The programs work without input from the operator, unnoticed and reliably, often distributed across several dozen microcomputers.
For the design and quality assurance of complex mechatronic systems with embedded software, Fraunhofer IESE is developing new testing processes and optimized development methods in the context of the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster "Digital Commercial Vehicle Technology". The institute is working especially on methods and process models that can be used in a future with ever more complex software structures to build commercial vehicles in many diverse variants according to a customer's wishes. This includes taking into account the requirements imposed by current safety standards as well as system architecture considerations and quality assurance aspects.
The Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster "Digital Commercial Vehicle Technology" under the leadership of Fraunhofer ITWM and Fraunhofer IESE is funded by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and the European Union.

Fraunhofer IESE is one of the worldwide leading research institutes in the area of software and systems development. A major portion of the products offered by our collaboration partners is defined by software. These products range from automotive and transportation systems to telecommunication and telematics equipment, from information systems and medical devices to software systems for the public sector. Our solutions allow flexible scaling. This makes us a competent technology partner for organizations of any size - from small companies to major corporations.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dieter Rombach and Prof. Peter Liggesmeyer, the past decade has seen us making major contributions to strengthening the emerging IT location Kaiserslautern.
In the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group, we are cooperating with other Fraunhofer institutes on developing trend-setting key technologies for the future.
Fraunhofer IESE is one of 56 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Together we have a major impact on shaping applied research in Europe and contribute to Germany's competitiveness in international markets. The institute is officially a "Selected Landmark 2008" of the German-wide initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas".
