Ten million US dollars for research into bio-inspired nanotechnology

    Professor Bengt Nordén at Chalmers University of Technology will receive, as one of twelve researchers in the world, funding from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KAUST in Saudi Arabia. The amount is two million US dollars annually for five years.

    The research project will adopt a basic science approach to learning how certain components in living cells function on the molecular level. Bengt Nordén will apply this knowledge in the design of new materials and structures with unique properties, mainly built on DNA and membranes.

    "It is about mechanical energy transport, with the aid of molecules, along what are on a nanoscale long distances, from 1 to 100 nanometres," says Bengt Nordén.

    This could have a significant impact on a wide range of applications and technologies of energy conversion, biotechnology and other fields.

    KAUST intends to become a major contributor to the global research community through its Global Research Partnership programme. The GRP programme will enable top-class researchers at the very forefront around the globe to work together to solve challenging scientific and technological problems.

    The organisation invited more than 60 major research universities from all over the world to propose work in four general scientific areas. The selection of candidates was made through a competitive peer-review process involving a group of experts, some of whom are Nobel Prize Laureates.

    "I am of course very honoured to receive this award. I am also convinced that the research project can be of great importance for Chalmers and will strengthen this exciting research area even further," says Bengt Nordén.

    The research is conducted at the home institution of the researcher and will take place in compliance with all applicable laws in the host country. The results are free for publication.

    Bengt Nordén
    Bengt Nordén is the Chair Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. Bengt Nordén is a world-renowned scientist and is currently the Chairman of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' Chemistry Class, which is awarding the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

    KAUST
    The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KAUST, is being built north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, as an international graduate level research university. KAUST is merit-based and open to men and women from around the world. The campus is planned to be ready for students in September 2009.
