Bauhaus-Alumni launch new online-journal. Call for proposals for the first issue "Urban change and urban identity"
We intend to dedicate the first issue of WEIMARPOLIS to the overall theme of "urban change and urban identity".
In a globalising world, the "identity" of cities as well as of their inhabitants has become a broadly discussed theme in the urban discourse. Since the renaissance of the "urban" issues of identity gained an increasingly practical impact on city policies and planning concepts. It is often stated that cities need to develop a special identity in order to be distinguishable in a global competition. Also, local identity matters in tackling social disintegration within cities, and apparently, globalisation reinforces the emergence of different identities within "one space". Yet, the very term of identity in a spatial context is far from being an agreed term, especially when looking at it from different angles of research, e.g. from the fields of planning, design, history as well as cultural and social sciences.
The following questions all touch upon the ontology of "society" and "space", and, intend to inspire authors to operate the issue of urban change and urban identity within their own field of research: How can we understand urban identity? Can a physical environment have an identity at all, or just the people inhabiting it? How can we best illustrate the interrelationship between urban identity and urban space? What constitutes urban identity - media, images, literature, landmarks, architectural and morphological remnants and traces, or social action? And finally, what does the constant change of the urban environment mean for urban identity: is it just accordingly transforming, does it constantly need to be reinvented, or is it rather a continuum in time?
Expression of interest: 15 September 2008
Deadline for articles: 1 November 2008
Articles can deal either with theoretical aspects, or case studies or observations from particular cities. On the publication of the first issue of WEIMARPOLIS we will be able to apply for an ISSN, so the journal will be a fully quotable scientific journal.
