Entry perspectives for German Master students - How about a starting salary of EUR 57,000?

Young people thinking about studying for a Master of Science in Management (MSc) usually hope that the extra qualification will help them find a better-paid job. Particularly in view of the expense involved, the salaries of recent graduates are an important factor in choosing an MSc program.
A recent survey of MSc graduates of HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Germany's oldest business school, revealed that their average starting salary was 57,000 euro, including extra benefits.

Why are the starting salaries of HHL graduates so high?

Melanie Janke, Head of Corporate Relations/Career Service at HHL, says: "The excellent starting salaries are the result of more than 46 % of the surveyed graduates finding jobs in the field of consulting. 26.7 % found jobs in industry, while the others either went into banking or started their own companies (13.3 % each)."
Some graduates received a benefits package including items such as a company car, relocation assistance or accommodation.
HHL graduates' strong position is further underlined in view of the Financial Times Deutschland's university league table 2008. Graduates from many of the institutions ranked earn considerably less than EUR 40,000 in their first job. That is, the starting salary of HHL's MSc graduates considerably exceeds the average starting salary of management graduates.
Money is, however, only one reason that the MSc program at HHL is becoming more and more popular. David Dohrmann who joined Daimler AG's Career Talent Program in Stuttgart after receiving his MSc from HHL, explains his reasons for choosing Leipzig: "I wanted to do a Master but it had to be at a really good university. For me, reputation was the most important consideration and was the decisive factor in me choosing HHL. I think you get not just a great education at HHL, you also develop on a personal level, and the combination prepares you superbly for working in an international company."

Master of Science in Management (MSc)

The Master's program of HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management is a consecutive program leading to the award of an MSc, with specializations in finance, accounting, marketing, logistics & supply chain management, strategy, or entrepreneurship.

What is so special about the MSc program at HHL?

o Covering 120 ECTS credits in 18 month, the course is more compact than other programs in Germany, which usually take two years. The MSc program at HHL is tightly organized and designe to avoid wasted time.
o The prerequisites for such tight scheduling, and also hugely beneficial for the study at HHL, is the intensive individual tutoring offered as well as the concept of the 24/7 university: the HHL Library, the computer pools and the group rooms are open to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
o Another distinctive feature is the MSc program's practical component. Whether it's at Bosch, Dunkin' Donuts or TomTom - compulsory field projects bring students into contact with the real business world early on in the program.
o Door opener internship: Our experience shows that, for the majority of HHL students, an additional internship during their studies, leads to a direct job offer still before graduation. Students benefit from HHL's Career Service and its high-level business contacts and may therefore expect attractive professional perspectives from the outset.
o HHL's MSc program is a trendsetter and sets new standards in management education. This is expressed by the program's emphasis on the cross-divisional function of integrated management with a corporate responsibility profile. Hence, the students' soft skills that are key to a successful management career are trained effectively and lastingly.
o The language of instruction in the program is English, and this is excellent preparation for a career in the international business world. In addition to showing a high standard of English, applicants must also demonstrate knowledge of a second foreign language in order to be admitted to the MSc program.
o In contrast to many other Master's programs in Germany, a period of study abroad is a compulsory component of the MSc program at HHL. With this, HHL's MSc program meets the demands of international businesses that prefer to recruit interculturally experienced applicants. The students may benefit from HHL's exchange relations to more than 100 partner institutions throughout the world.
