3rd Biocuration Conference in Berlin on April 16-19 - Introducing a new International Society for Biocuration (ISB)
Life is data. Lots of data. The findings of biologists are presented in the scientific literature and in very large data sets stemming from experiments. Searching for relevant data would be like looking for the needle in a haystack without biocuration. Biocuration involves the translation of information relevant to biology into an organized form, typically as a database. Biocurators integrate the data, represent them accurately and easily to access, as both a source of information for working scientists, and a basis for computational analysis. So Biocurators provide essential resources to the biological community.
At the 3rd International Biocuration Conference in Berlin on April 16-19, over 200 curators and developers of biological databases will meet to discuss their work, promote collaboration, and foster a sense of community in this active and growing area of research. They will give on outlook into the future of annotation and biocuration and present systems such as SABIO-RK, a reaction kinetics database for biochemical reactions developed at EML Research in Heidelberg. Furthermore, they will introduce the newly formed International Society for Biocuration (ISB).
Plenary speakers are Professor Janet Thornton (UK), Director of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), Dr. Jim Ostell (U.S.), Chief of the Information Engineering Branchat the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)), and Professor Philip Bourne (U.S.), University of California San Diego.
Focus Areas of the conference are:
* Supporting and Encouraging Community Deposition and Annotation
* Community Curation
* Literature Collection and Curation
* Genome Sequence Annotation and Comparative Genomics
* Standards, Controlled Vocabularies and Ontologies
* Functional Genomics Data Curation
The conference is organized and hosted by EML Research (Heidelberg).
