FIZ Karlsruhe and its partners make research publications in computer science freely available / extensive content from different sources available through one common interface /search functions and performance improved / knowledge transfer fosters innovation
Karlsruhe, April 2009 - FIZ Karlsruhe now offers its computer science portal io-port.net, which was launched for the first time 3 years ago (http://www.io-port.net), free of charge with a new database interface and numerous new search functions. FIZ Karlsruhe produces the database together with its partners Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) e.V., University of Trier, Springer-Verlag GmbH and IEEE Computer Society.
io-port.net is a freely accessible database with more than one million computer science publications. Documents from different sources are offered in a standardized format through one common search interface (duplicates have been removed):
o CompuScience produced by FIZ Karlsruhe
o DBLP (Digital Bibliography & Library Project) offered by the University of Trier
o LNI (Lecture Notes in Informatics) and other publications by Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) e.V.
o IEEE Computer Society Digital Library
o LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) by Springer-Verlag GmbH
o Publications from other publishers (e.g. Elsevier GmbH, Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KgaA, Blackwell Verlag GmbH, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, IOS Verlag, World Scientific Publishing Co., Taylor and Francis Group)
The database covers the time range from 1931 to the present. This makes it the most comprehensive source of data on the historical development of computer science. The database contains bibliographical meta data, links to electronic full-texts and, for most of the references, article summaries or abstracts written by scientists.
"The computer science portal io-port.net offers easy access to research publications from all over the world. Evaluated and standardized records offer a significant value-add to scientists," says Silke Rehme, Vice President Content and Services at FIZ Karlsruhe. "Besides, no other computer science information service of this kind offers the possibility to include so many papers and abstracts in the search."
The new search interface enables both intuitive access and more refined searches using search fields. A specific search language is available for complex database searches. The data are thoroughly edited so that Open URL functions can be integrated.
"Our freely accessible computer science portal is targeted at computer scientists at universities and scientific associations as well as software developers in industry", says Rehme. "Targeted, quick and efficient access to relevant knowledge is a prerequisite for innovation in science and technology."

For more than 30 years, FIZ Karlsruhe has been developing and providing high-quality services for information transfer and innovative solutions for knowledge management in research. Its main activities are the operation of the online service STN International which focuses on science and patent information and is operated together with Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), and the development of the KnowEsis product line offering e-Science solutions for web-based scientific work. FIZ Karlsruhe also produces databases and information services and operates scientific portals, mainly in mathematics, computer science, energy and crystallography. Primary literature can be ordered through the full-text broker service FIZ AutoDoc.
FIZ Karlsruhe is a member of the Leibniz Association (WGL) which consists of 86 research and service institutions and six associate members. The Leibniz institutes' fields of activity include natural sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, business and social sciences, territorial planning and building research, and the humanities. The institutes handle strategic and subject-oriented issues of public interest and are therefore jointly sponsored by the German Federal Government and the German Federal States.
