Two-movement composition for organ and brass sextet to be performed as part of an international organ competition in September 2010
The School of Music took up residence in its new home on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz six months ago. Its new location not only provides facilities for study, teaching, and research, but also new opportunities for artistic practice. During the semester, students and academic staff as well as well-known guest performers give concerts almost daily. The musicians have already been provided with two particularly attractive venues in the "Roter Salon" and the "Black Box" studio stage. An organ performance hall will be added in autumn 2010, by which time the installation of the concert organ manufactured by the leading Swiss organ builders Goll of Lucerne should have been completed. In the run-up of the inauguration, the School of Music has decided to hold a competition for a new composition and is now calling for entries.
The School is planning to hold an international organ competition in autumn 2010 when the new organ is inaugurated. One of the items on the program will be a chamber work for organ and brass. It is for exactly this item that the School of Music has decided to hold a competition. Composers are being asked to submit a two-movement work for organ and brass sextet with a duration of eight to ten minutes. The composition should be appropriate both as a concert item and for use as a piece of church music. The first prize is worth € 3,000. The winning composition will be premiered and the prize awarded during the music competition to be held at the School of Music in September 2010.
The jury, under the chairmanship of the Rector of the School of Music, Professor Jürgen Blume, will include internationally prominent personalities, including Professor Thierry Escaich of the Conservatoire Supérieur der Paris, the composer and trombonist Professor Vinko Globokar, Professor Alfred Müller of the Mainz School of Music, and Professor Zsigmond Szathmáry of Freiburg. The competition is being organized by the Heads of the Church/Organ Music Department of the School of Music, Professor Gerhard Gnann und Professor Hans-Jürgen Kaiser.
Competitors are asked to submit their entries by December 31, 2009 to
