The interaction of six Swedish choir conductors with the choirs they conduct has been examined in detail using video recordings of rehearsals and concerts. The results constitute Ragnhild Sandberg Jurström's doctoral thesis in music education at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg. In her work she reveals the complexity and multifaceted nature of the communication between choir conductors and singers.
Previous research on choirs has for the most part been based on experiments, questionnaires and interviews, but here it is the practical activity that is analysed.
The study shows how choir conductors' use of speech, piano playing, gestures, gazes and other bodily expressions shapes a culture in choirs where both visual and aural impressions become important. The choir conductors constantly vary their mode of interpreting and illustrating the music depending on their choice of resources. This consequently shapes a musical language in the choirs that is choir-specific, genre-specific and locally formulated in the interplay between choir conductor and choir singers. The study also demonstrates how choir conductors use their knowledge to guide and coordinate the musical work, at the same time as they utilize the choir singers' own experiences and knowledge and allow them to take responsibility for a large part of the successful result.
Ragnhild Sandberg Jurström's hope is that the results will stimulate reflections and discussions among choir conductors and choir singers, as well as among music teachers and students about the choir conductor's role, and how the choice of mode of communication creates a range of conditions as to how choir singers have to be able to learn to express the music that is subsequently performed in concert.
Ragnhild Sandberg Jurström is a trained piano teacher, music teacher and choir teacher. She has taught in both art college and upper secondary school with choir singing and piano as her main subjects. For many years she has also conducted a number of mixed choirs. With a professional interest in both the creative and learning processes in choirs' activities she has studied what takes place in the musical communication between choir conductor and choir singer on a deeper level.
