Hohenstein Institute combines professional competencies - New department "Function and Care"

    Starting on 1 October 2009, the Hohenstein Institute will be bundling its professional competencies in the current company segments Clothing Physiology and Textile Services & Innovations into a new department by the name of "Function and Care". The department will be managed by Dr. Andreas Schmidt who will be succeeding Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Umbach. Dr. Umbach will be retiring from his active role as Director of the Clothing Physiology department as he celebrates his 65th birthday in October. However, he will continue to assist the Hohenstein Institute in an advisory role. Dr. Jan Beringer will assume the role of scientific manager at the new "Function and Care" department starting in October, and will hence be responsible for the largest research area at Hohenstein.
    The restructuring will not affect any of the research projects and service products of the previous departments, and they will be continued in the usual muanner. In the future, the "Function and Care" segment will combine physiological comfort measurements of textile materials and manufactured articles as well as activities in the area of functional innovative textiles, commercial laundries, textile leasing, textile finishing and colour measurements under one roof. The new department will also be responsible for the comprehensive services offered to member operations of the Gütegemeinschaft sachgemäße Wäschepflege e.V. and for the practical seminars which are offered to laundries and textile service providers. Moreover, effective immediately the department will also be responsible for conducting the testing and certification for personal protective equipment.

KGaA following his studies and doctorate at the universities of Duesseldorf and Duisburg as well as the Deutsches Textilforschungszentrum Nord-West e.V. He held the position of laboratory manager in Textile Fibres until 2008, and was subsequently in charge of product development in the area of metal pre-treatment and light metals (automotive).     Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Umbach has worked at the Hohenstein Institute since 1976; in his role as Director of the Clothing Physiology department he made a significant contribution towards expanding and establishing this discipline in the areas of research, testing and standardisation. His areas of responsibility included the interaction of body-climate-clothing, wearing comfort of textiles and clothing, functional sports, work and protective clothing, climatic sitting comfort of vehicle seats and upholstered furniture, as well as the sleeping comfort of bed linens. With approximately 200 publications, he is also globally recognised as a renowned specialist in the area of clothing physiology.
