Internationality in the Spotlight

Eberhard Scholz Pressestelle
Universität Bremen

Two New Scholarship Projects Contribute to the Internationalisation of the University of Bremen.

“Living internationality” in an interdisciplinary research and education atmosphere is the programme of the International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) at the University of Bremen. Since mid-2005 the IGS has been offering excellent researchers from all around the world – especially from the so called “emerging logistic markets” China, Southeast Asia, Latin America as well as from Germany – the opportunity to complete an efficient, structured doctoral training programme at a logistic location of long standing tradition.

Until now, a total of thirty-eight young researchers – from nineteen countries – joined the IGS. The IGS’s average of 80% foreign doctoral students tops the mean number of international students in doctoral training programmes in engineering sciences. The German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) awarded a prize for this innovative approach in the category “Internationalisation” to the IGS in 2011 in the competition “Best practices and new ideas to improve the doctorate in engineering sciences”. Now, the IGS has acquired two additional projects which contribute further to the internationalisation strategy of the University of Bremen:

    1. The IGS succeeded in the competition “GSSP – Graduate School Scholarship Programme” of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Thus, beginning in 2013, the IGS is offering four DAAD-scholarships to outstanding international doctoral students. The research focus of any candidate should fit into the field of “Dynamics in Logistics”. The current advertisement of the scholarships is available at http://www.logistics-gs.uni-bremen.de.
    2. The IGS is partner of the ERASMUS MUNDUS project “cLINK – Centre of Excellence for Learning, Innovation, Networking and Knowledge”. This project facilitates the academic exchange between European and Asian universities. Beyond the University of Bremen the other European universities are in Great Britain, France, Romania and Hungary. cLINK offers scholarships for students and lecturers on all levels of qualification. Promising candidates will stay between one month and two years at the European university. The students will come from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, China, India, Malaysia and Thailand.
These additional funding sources strengthen the academic excellence of the IGS and of the University of Bremen and improve their visibility in global networks.

    Doctoral Training in Logistics

The International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) aims to identify, describe and model the intrinsic dynamics of present logistic processes and networks. By exploiting new technologies, new dynamic planning and control processes will be researched and developed. The IGS meets the challenge of globalisation through practice-oriented research within the scope of fundamental and application-focusses research. The research topics of the IGS focus on:
    • Business models, decision processes and economic analyses of dynamics in logistics
    • Holistic interdisciplinary methods for modelling, analysis and simulation of dynamics in logistics
    • Synchronisation of material, information, decision and financial flows
    • Adaptive and dynamic control methods in logistics
The objective of the IGS is to foster excellence in research and education by pursuing an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach. Thus, the curriculum includes individual doctorate projects, disciplinary supervision, scientific mentoring as well as specific trainings in the field of complementary skills. The working language is English.

    Logistics Research in Bremen

The IGS is embedded in the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics (LogDynamics). The latter is a cooperating network of research groups originated from four faculties of the University of Bremen: Physics/Electrical Engineering, Mathematics/Computer Science, Production Engineering and Business Studies/Economics. Associated partners are: BIBA – Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), and the Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH. All these partners involve the young scientists in a vitalised dialogue beyond disciplinary and cultural boundaries.

    Hilfe
