7. World Congress for Nuclear Medicine and Biology
August 30 - September 4, 1998, ICC Berlin
Ladies and Gentlemen,
about 2.700 Nuclear Medicine specialists and scientists of other disciplines are expected to attend the 7th World Congress für Nuclear Medicine and Biology in Berlin which is under the patronage of the Bundespräsident Roman Herzog. This is the first time, that Germany is the host of this congress organized by the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNM&B). After 1982 (Paris) this event takes place again in Europe. To attract as many scientists as possible, this conference is a Joint Congress with the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). Additionally to the 6 days in Berlin, a total of 3 Pre-Congress Meetings and 7 Post-Congress Meetings (September 5 and 6) will take place.
The scientific program presents with different highlights as Nuclear Medicine is an interdisciplinary speciality. The results of this conference will be summarized for you on Monday, August 31, 1998, in a german/english press briefing. As different topics will be covered, we would like to invite you to attend both press conferences.
The german language press briefing will start at 11.00 a.m. You will have the chance to inform yourself about the state of the art of Nuclear Medicine by listening and interviewing international experts. The following topics will be discussed:
- A review on the different indications for Nuclear Medicine in diagnosis and therapy including Radiation Protection and Radiation Exposition in Nuclear Medicine
(Prof. Harald Schicha, Cologne)
- Prof. Manfred Fischer (Kassel) will summarize the new aspects of radionuclide therapy. Here, well established procedures like radiosynoviorthesis in rheumatoid arthritis and bone pain palliation in cancer patients will be discussed. Above that, new therapeutic procedures - for the first time presented in Berlin - for the therapy of lymphoma, tumors of the bowel and the brain will be presented.
- Prof. Klaus Hahn (Munich) will summarize new aspects of Nuclear Medicine in the diagnosis of diseases of the bones especially in children. These data will also include results in malignant and inflammatory lesions as well as the results in the "battered child".
- Prof. Angelika Bischof Delaloye (Lausanne), the President of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, will summarize the highlights of the conference with respect to diagnostic procedures in cancer. Here, it will be shown that Nuclear Medicine can add visualization of cell function to tumor morphology.
- The role of Nuclear Medicine in the diagnosis and therapy planing in coronary artery disease will be presented by Prof. Udalrich Büll (Aachen). He will focus on the therapeutic strategies after myocardial infarction.
Other highlights will be presented during the english language press briefing at 12.30 a.m.:
- Prof. Henry Wagner (Baltimore), the Nestor of Nuclear Medicine, will inform the audience about cost benefit structures in Nuclear Medicine. He will include the experiences in the United States as only few analyses have been performed in Europe.
- Prof. Wolfgang Becker (Göttingen) will talk about bone pain palliation in cancer patients as well as the value of new immunotherapy in colon cancer and other tumors.
- Nuclear Medicine procedures in children will be presented by Prof. Jim Conway (Chicago). He will focus on renal dieseases.
- Prof. Markus Schwaiger (Munich) will provide data on a new diagnostic procedure, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), in the diagnosis of cancer and heart diseases.
- Receptor imaging in Alzheimers' disease and Parkinsons' disease will be discussed by Prof. Peter Josef Ell (London).
Additionally, further press conferences (background information) are offered on Tuesday, September 1, 1998:
Together with the German Cancer Society we want to inform you about new perspectives in the diagnosis and therapy of breast cancer. This conference will start at 12.30 a.m. Topics are high dose chemotherapy as well as new non-invasive diagnostic procedures.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna) and the WHO have also organized symposia during this conference. Both organisations invite you to a press conference at 11.00 a.m. The main topic will be Nuclear Medicine in less developed countries.
It goes without saying that you are invited to participate in the whole scientific program.
