For the ninth time, the international wood-based materials branch will meet up in Hanover. From the 8th to the 10th of October, 2014 the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI and the European Panel Federation EPF are organizing the 9th European Wood-Based Panel Symposium. They are thereby being supported by the International Association for Technical Issues Related to Wood (iVTH) and Sasol Wax.
In a total of 23 specialist presentations, international speakers will present new results on the subjects of “Raw materials”, “Environment and health” and “Markets and new technologies for wood-based materials”. The number of presentations has been reduced compared to the previous symposium; this is in order to allow more time for discussions.
Ladislaus Döry, President of the EPF, will begin the symposium with a report on the current situation within the European wood-based materials industry. Fred Kamke, OSU, USA and Shizehiko Suzuki from the Shizuoka University, Japan will talk about their respective domestic markets. Thomas A. Julia, CPA, USA will provide information on EPA and CARB regulations. Adalbert Westermann from Pfleiderer will demonstrate mega-trends and Alex Berg from the Universidad de Concepcion, Chile will talk about the supply of raw materials to manufacturers of wood-based materials in South America. The needs of the German pre-fabricated building industry will be explained by Georg Lange from BDF. Further specialist presentations will focus on adhesives, measuring and sorting techniques and the application of nano materials. Emissions from formaldehyde are also a topic: two presentations from the WKI deal with the various international customary chamber methods as well as the formaldehyde reference source which is being established at the WKI and which should ensure quality levels during measurement.
For the first time, the participants can discuss topics with the speakers during the daily panel discussions. Two evening events will enable networking in a relaxed atmosphere. The evening reception on 9.10. is traditionally supported by Sasol Wax; the location for the event will be kept secret until shortly before the event begins.
For the 8th Wood-Based Panel Symposium in 2012, 280 participants from 31 countries took part. 27 presentations provided information on current developments and challenges in the field of wood-based materials.
