NIT takes part in Hamburg Dialog Platform Industrie 4.0

What does Industrie 4.0 mean for tomorrow’s employees? What will be the repercussions of increasing automation for qualification, employment, and organization? These are the issues that NIT and TUHH are dealing with as part of the Hamburg Dialog Platform Industrie 4.0, which was initiated by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and regional industrial associations.

Industrie 4.0 stands for the fourth industrial revolution and deals with the development of increasing autonomy of production processes. Major progress in robotics, artificial intelligence, and data network technologies is lowering the borders between the virtual and the real world, thereby making more flexible and more effective production processes possible. Industrie 4.0 developments thus offer opportunities and pose challenges to companies in Hamburg and the Hamburg metropolitan region. They are to be identified, discussed, and utilized by the Dialog Platform Industrie 4.0, which was established by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the IVH, ZVEI, VDMA, and VDI industrial associations.

The Dialog Platform Industrie 4.0 provides a framework within which academia and enterprises can deal jointly with the targeted (r)evolution of Industrie 4.0 and set tangible milestones of their own in key areas of this overall development. The initial workshop was held at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in March 2015. After a brief introduction entitled “What is Industrie 4.0?” four work groups dealt with the following issues:

- Automation in manufacturing
- What changes will there be in the logistics chain?
- Requirements of IT and communication
- Repercussions for qualification, employment, and organization

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kersten of the Institute for Logistics and Management at the Hamburg University of Technology is in charge of the workshop “Industrie 4.0 – Repercussions for Qualification, Employment, and Organization”, in collaboration with Verena Fritzsche, CEO of NIT Northern Institute of Technology Management. Initial ideas were collected during the workshop and, inter alia, “leadership” was identified as an important element. “That,” Verena Fritzsche said, “is an area in which the NIT as a management school for engineers has extensive expertise.” In the months ahead the work group will continue to discuss this subject area and draw up recommendations for companies.

Alongside the Dialog Platform Industrie 4.0 the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) is undertaking a study entitled “Potentials of Industrie 4.0 for Business in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.” It will be based on a survey of companies that is to be carried out in the weeks ahead, with results expected in September 2015.
