Frankfurt architectural firm schneider+schumacher presents its plans for the new construction project in the former coal cellar of Mannheim Palace
Important basis for further qualitative and quantitative growth of Mannheim Business School
Scheduled to open in early 2017
In the global Financial Times Executive Education Ranking for Customized Programs Mannheim Business School (MBS) reaches an impressive 5th place – with one small flaw: While MBS was placed among the top three globally in many categories, its facilities received less glowing assessments by its corporate clients. However, this is bound to change in 2017. Over the coming two years, a study and conference center will be built in the west wing of the courtyard (Ehrenhof) at Mannheim Palace that will serve as an impressive calling card for the university and its business school both architecturally and functionally.
The in many respects extraordinary new construction will be built in the disused boiler room and coal cellar of Mannheim Palace, which is one of the largest baroque palaces in the world. But MBS participants will not be learning and working in a subterranean environment isolated from the life of the university. On the contrary: the study and conference center, with its two semicircular lecture halls, an additional flexible-use conference area, ten breakout rooms and a large foyer, will face the palace garden at the back of the west wing from behind a large glass façade. “An old coal cellar will become a land-art project in the garden of Mannheim Palace,” emphasizes the architect, Professor Michael Schumacher, whose firm has already successfully implemented a very similar project with the planning of the subterranean extension of Frankfurt's renowned Städel Museum. “Together with the historic palace, the facility, which extends into the existing garden, forms a striking new unit symbolizing at once both the preservation and respect for tradition as well as the significance of innovation and the drive to expand knowledge,” says Schumacher. The overall cost of the new study and conference center has been estimated at 8.5 million euros. The project will be financed by MBS, which will receive usage rights for 20 years with an option for an additional 10 years. After that, the facility will be at the disposal of the University of Mannheim.
“Mannheim Business School was founded approximately ten years ago to further enhance the international reputation of the University of Mannheim. Its enormous growth, its proven quality, as demonstrated not least through numerous high ranking positions, and its economic success show that the Business School has become our flagship,” says University of Mannheim President Professor Dr. Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden. “With the new premises, MBS is gaining a spectacular building as a basis for further growth both in terms of quality and quantity.” In not quite ten years, Mannheim Business School has increased its enrollment in its degree programs tenfold from 50 to 500. With its MBA, Executive MBA and Customized Programs it is represented among the global top 30 in at least one of the leading global rankings (Bloomberg Businessweek, Financial Times, The Economist). “We still see a great deal of growth potential with the Customized Programs and Open Courses and will be creating the requisite infrastructure to enable that growth,” says MBS President Professor Dr. Jens Wüstemann.

Mannheim Business School (MBS) is the umbrella organization for management education at the University of Mannheim and the only German institution accredited by AACSB International, EQUIS and AMBA. The school offers three international MBA programs: the Mannheim MBA (part-time and full-time), the ESSEC & MANNHEIM Executive MBA with two formats (weekend and modular) and the MANNHEIM & TONGJI Executive MBA.
