“Leibniz at the Bremen Parliament” strengthens dialogue between science and politics

Dr. Susanne Eickhoff Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie (ZMT)

On October 14, 2015 scientists from Leibniz institutes in Bremen, Hamburg and Lower-Saxony will visit members of the Bremen Parliament for an exchange on a variety of topics from the areas of education and society, health, city and urban space, environment and sustainability, conflict, development cooperation, technology, economy and structural change.

During “Leibniz at the Bremen Parliament” members of the Bremen parliament from all political parties have the chance to discuss socially relevant topics on a one-to-one basis with competent dialogue partners and at the same time find out about the diversity of expert knowledge at Leibniz institutes in the region. The scientists of the Leibniz Association present current research trends and results and have the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with political decision makers.

Following the individual talks, Christiane Neumann, General Secretary of the Leibniz association will address the members of Bremen Parliament as part of a “Parliamentary Evening”. She will talk about the relevance of the interface between politics and science and the importance of Bremen as a science location for the Leibniz Association.

Science contributes to meet social challenges in an informed manner. Opportunities for dialogue such as “Leibniz at the Bremen Parliament” serve to convey scientific findings with benefits for society at an early stage and to enrich both politics and science through direct dialogue. It is one of the central goals of the Leibniz Association to find answers to current socially relevant questions through encounters between science, public and politics. “Leibniz at the Bremen Parliament” makes a contribution to this endeavour.

The event is organised by Dr. Bevis Fedder, head of the Office for Knowledge Exchange at the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT). “Many political decisions result from scientific findings and in turn science also relies on political support. Our initiative “Leibniz at the Bremen Parliament” serves to strengthen the dialogue between science and politics in the region. It is modelled on similar events such as ‘Leibniz at the Landtag’ in North Rhine-Westphalia and ‘Leibniz at the Bundestag’,” says Dr. Fedder.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the “Parliamentary Evening”.

    About the Leibniz Association

The Leibniz Association connects 89 independent research institutions that range in focus from the natural, engineering and environmental sciences via economics, spatial and social sciences to the humanities. Leibniz institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance. They conduct knowledge-driven and applied basic research, maintain scientific infrastructure and provide research-based services.
The Leibniz Association identifies focus areas for knowledge transfer to policy-makers, academia, business and the public. Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities – in the form of “Leibniz ScienceCampi” (thematic partnerships between university and non-university research institutes), for example – as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad. They are subject to an independent evaluation procedure that is unparalleled in its transparency. Due to the importance of the institutions for the country as a whole, they are funded jointly by the Federation and the Länder, employing some 18,100 individuals, including 9,200 researchers. The entire budget of all the institutes is approximately 1.64 billion EUR.

About the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology

In research and education the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Bremen is dedicated to the better understanding of tropical coastal ecosystems. As an interdisciplinary Leibniz institute the ZMT conducts research on the structure and functioning of tropical coastal ecosystems and their reaction to natural changes and human interactions. It aims to provide a scientific basis for the protection and sustainable use of these ecosystems. The ZMT works in close cooperation with partners in the tropics, where it supports capacity building and the development of infrastructures in the area of sustainable coastal zone management. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association.
