Research enhanced at DZNE’s site Magdeburg
Magdeburg, November 24, 2015. This morning, Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Science Hartmut Möllring inaugurated the new MR-PET device at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, site Magdeburg. The MR-PET device has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for dementia research and will have a significant influence on the development of new procedures for early diagnosis and treatment. This is because the device can simultaneously measure molecular and functional processes in the brain, i.e. the release of a substance and the region of the brain that controls it. „With the investments we are strengthening the knowledge process at the highest scientific level. At the same time we are creating conditions for the continuity of international competiveness of Magdeburg’s Brain Research”, emphasizes Hartmut Möllring, Minister of Sciences and Economic Affairs Sachsen-Anhalt.
“The MR-PET device can be used for all neurodegenerative diseases and for researching aging processes in the brain,” says Prof. Emrah Düzel, spokesperson for the Magdeburg site. The device will be available to the entire DZNE, and the University of Magdeburg will also be able to use it by cooperative agreement. It is particularly interesting for the fields of experimental tumor research, pediatric oncology, psychology and neurology.

The DZNE site Magdeburg opened back in September 2009, and currently has around 80 staff. The outstanding research opportunities draw both national and international scientists, with representatives of fifteen countries currently working on site. The site is excellent at acquiring external funding. Its proximity to Magdeburg University Hospital’s Neurological Clinic fosters close cooperation between research and clinical practice, for example in the form of a jointly run “Preventive Research Cooperation Unit”, in which patients can benefit from the prompt integration of new knowledge into clinical routine.

The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) investigates the causes of diseases of the nervous system and develops strategies for prevention, treatment and care. It is an institution of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with nine sites across Germany (Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen and Witten). The DZNE cooperates closely with universities, their clinics and other research facilities.
