Hospital energy centre connected with heating network

Working in conjunction with Giessen’s municipal utility company, Giessen and Marburg University Hospital has become the first German hospital to integrate its energy centre into an urban district heating network. The core of the combined cooling, heating and power plant is provided by four cogeneration modules that produce electricity and heat. The BINE Projektinfo brochure 12/2015 “Energy centre supplies Giessen University Hospital” describes the initial operating experiences.

The newly developed trigeneration plant reduces CO2 by around a third

The four (CHP) modules supply electricity and heat. The chillers coupled to them cool sensitive hospital rooms and equipment. The advantage of this configuration is that the CHP units can be operated with a high number of full load hours, since a hospital requires a secure provision of cooling energy throughout the year. If the heat supplied by the CHP units is not needed, both it and the cooling energy can be fed into the network belonging to the municipal utility company. This integration into the district heating and cooling network also provides optimum supply security for the University Hospital.

“After the supply system was extended and further linked, we were able to continually improve the operational times. The plant is now fully utilised. In addition, a peak load boiler with a capacity of 10 MW has been installed in the external area for use on extremely cold winter days,” says Christian Launhardt from the Stadtwerke Giessen municipal utility company.
