"We Do Not Need Strategies for Men and Women but for Mothers and Fathers"

Handelsblatt Business School Talk on "Membership in Executive and Supervisory Boards – Strategies for Women and Men" in Cologne on December 11, 2015

There are currently 11 women on Germany's top 100 supervisory boards. The German economy is struggling to meet the female quota demanded by political resolution. The Handelsblatt Business School Talks, which took place in Cologne on Friday, December 11, 2015 with slightly more than 150 guests, focused on the challenges companies are facing and what strategies there are for female and male executives. Handelsblatt editor Anja Müller served as moderator of the event.

"Without a quota, it will be another 300 years until something changes," explained Dr. Kerstin Fehre, HHL alumna post-doctoral candidate at the Institute of Management, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Tax law expert Prof. Dr. Johanna Hey demanded, "We do not strategies for men and women but for mothers and fathers." Moreover, the Director of the Institute of Tax Law at the University of Cologne, who also works on two supervisory boards, continued, "Flexible work times and a home office allow people to work but not to be promoted." Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schwenker, who, for many years, was the Chairman of the Executive and Supervisory Board of Roland Berger and currently serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board, is in favor of the quota, commenting that it was rather odd to hear, when filling a position on the Supervisory Board, things would be even better if he were a woman. Dr. Werner Görg, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Gothaer Finanzholding AG and President of the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce, explained that women not climbing up the career ladder was also a result of communication problems. "In times of crises, it was mainly the male networks that took control," said Dr. Görg. This also plays a role in promotion. Prof. Dr. Helga Rübsamen-Schaeff established the link to entrepreneurship. The virologist and Chairwoman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Aicuris, a company which she established, has had three careers – one in science, one in the industry and one as an entrepreneur. Finally, she was able to implement her leadership ideas, e.g., that trust in the employees is the best incentive for good performance. A high level of freedom as well as seats on several supervisory boards only came once she had founded her own business. Closing the event, HHL Dean Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart commented, "With today's Handelsblatt Business Talk, we encouraged our guests, among them many HHL students, to further deal with this topic. What I am taking home from this discussion is the fact that, if we want to make changes, we have to change our culture."
