Justifying Power and Decisions in the 21st Century: Rethinking Legitimacy from a PPE perspective
Witten/Herdecke University, May 6 – 8, 2016
How can political science, economics and philosophy contribute to shedding light on the current discussion of legitimacy in the 21st century? What are the latest research topics and hotly debated issues – and what is currently missing on the agenda?
The challenges facing modern society do not respect academic or national boundaries. In the highly complex and mutually interdependent societies of the 21st century, the most convincing and lasting impetus comes from individuals who think in interdisciplinary terms and know how to integrate economic, political and philosophical perspectives. Thus, the topic of “legitimacy” lends itself particularly well to our debate as it brings together a plethora of the yet-to-be-answered questions about what it actually means for a society to operate a morally legitimate, politically stable and economically viable social arrangement.
The aim of the conference is to give advanced undergraduate, graduate and PhD students working in the field of PPE an opportunity to present and discuss their projects with peers, receive feedback for work in progress, and build a wider community of interdisciplinary students across Germany, Europe and beyond.
The conference will consist of five keynote speeches and a series of paper sessions, organised by the scientific committee.
Keynote speakers:
Dr. Fiona Adamson, University of London
Dr. Karen Horn, Humboldt-Universität Berlin
Prof. Dr. Fabienne Peter, University of Warwick
Dr. Robert Lepenies, Freie Universität Berlin
Dr. Lisa Herzog, Universität Frankfurt am Main
Call for Papers from December 1 until February 14, 2016
Email complete papers (also past papers) to:

The scientific committee will make a selection of participants based on the quality and relevance of submitted papers. The expected text length is between 6000 and 8000 words. Based on presentations at the conference, the scientific committee will invite selected authors to contribute to a book to be published in 2016.
We particularly encourage you to develop your own thoughts on the theme, to connect your current seminar work with the conference topic … and to submit your own paper! We are looking forward to receiving your ideas!

PPE in Witten:
Witten/Herdecke University offers “Philosophy, Politics, and Economics” in two formats: as a Bachelor programme and as an English-language consecutive Master programme. Both programmes were initiated out of the conviction that the economic, ecological and social challenges of the future will primarily emerge at the interfaces between academic disciplines. In a pervasively networked and increasingly complex world there is a growing demand for graduates with transdisciplinary education who are trained to address the multiple aspects of complex decision processes in context and know how to derive appropriate options for action.
