Less waste with linerless labels

Dr. Edda Schulze / Dr. Jürgen Krauter Corporate Communications
Evonik Industries AG

    • Patented TEGO®RC silicones from Evonik make self-adhesive, linerless products possible
    • UV-curing silicones reduce material costs and conserve resources
    • Innovative technology is easily integrated into modern facilities

Up to 40 percent of the weight of a self-adhesive label is made up of a release liner that is binned once the label has been peeled off. TEGO®RC silicones from Evonik, which are applied invisibly to the top of the print, makes release liners superfluous and help to eliminate this waste. Labels can even be rolled up without sticking to one another. This does not only reduce the total weight and the associated material costs by up to 40 percent, but it also conserves resources.

The patented TEGO®RC silicones have another advantage. RC stands for radiation cured, which means the silicones are set and cured not using heat, as in the case of conventional self-adhesive systems, but rather using UV radiation—and in fractions of a second. “Compared to labelling systems with thermally cured silicones, RC silicones reduce energy consumption and conserve the label,” explains Dr. Stefan Stadtmüller, vice president of Surface Technologies at Evonik. “TEGO®RC silicones can therefore also be used for heat-sensitive materials.”

UV-curing silicones from Evonik have already stood the test as release coatings for all kinds of self-adhesive products. In close cooperation with machine manufacturers, it was shown that UV siliconizing can be easily integrated into modern facilities to manufacture self-adhesive products.

There is a wide range of final applications for linerless technology, from the tagging of food packaging and labelling of consumer goods to use in transportation and logistics.
