On February 8, 2016, Prof. Dr. Peter Gumbsch, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg, Germany and Professor of Mechanics of Materials at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, was elected for membership in the USA’s National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Prof. Gumbsch was chosen for his multiscale modeling research work and the associated contributions in the fields of fracture mechanics and deformation behavior of materials.
Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." Founded in 1964, the NAE marshals the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering, technology and the quality of life.
Prof. Dr. Peter Gumbsch is among the NAE’s youngest members. He is the Senator of the Section Engineering Sciences of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and member of the German Council of Science and Humanities.
