Celebration of the 75th anniversary of the world's first computer by Konrad Zuse.
75 years ago the computer age started in Berlin. The structural engineer Konrad Zuse presented in 1941 in Berlin his "abacus" Z3. The Z3 was the first fully functional program-controlled computer in the world. In addition, he developed a universal algorithmic language "Plankalkül". On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the first computer the "Zuse Institute Berlin" (ZIB) organizes on May 11 a festive Colloquium, entitled "The Digital Future".
At the colloquium more than 1.000 scientists and guests from around the world are expected. The topics of the lectures cover all areas of computing and digital research and are thematically clustered into five sessions: "Simulation, Optimization, Visualization", "Data Analysis, Big Data and Security / Privacy", "The Future of Computing", "Networks and Mobility" and "Communication, Digital Society and Gaming". Confirmed speakers include world-renowned experts such as Genevieve Bell (Intel), Jennifer Chayes (Managing Director of Microsoft Research New England in Cambridge and in New York City), Leslie Greengard (Courant Institute, NYU and Founding Director, Simons Center for Data Analysis), Tony Hey (Chief Data Scientist, Science and Technology Facilities Council), Yannis Kevrekidis (Princeton U), Steve Oberlin (Vice President and CTO, NVIDIA), Michele Parrinello (ETH Zürich / USI Lugano), Jonathan Schaeffer (U Alberta and the Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence), Steve Scott (Senior Vice President and CTO, Cray Inc.), Ed Seidel (National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)) and Thomas Wiegand (TU Berlin, Executive Director of Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute). The historical keynote lecture is given by Konrad Zuse’s son Horst Zuse. The conference is organized by Prof. Christof Schütte, President of the Zuse Institute.
