Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich visited the CRTD on May 25th, 2016 - as it is one of the research centers in Saxony supported by the Excellence Initiative. He wanted to receive a first-hand update on diabetes, retina, and neurodegeneration research. Together with CRTD research group leaders and leading representatives of TU Dresden, he discussed the latest findings in basic medical research and their relevance for future therapies (“translation“).

Dresden. At the DFG Research Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), Cluster of Excellence at TU Dresden, basic researchers and physicians are working on the development of modern regenerative treatment approaches for diabetes, and hematological-immunological, neurodegenerative, and bone diseases. Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich visited the CRTD, in order to be informed about the latest projects in diabetes, retina, and neurodegeneration research. He was accompanied by TUD Rector Prof. Dr. Hans Müller-Steinhagen and Vice-Rector for Research Prof. Dr. Gerhard Rödel. The delegation could experience first-hand working conditions at the highest level, the quality of the CRTD’s interdisciplinary approaches, and the collaboration of leading international researchers.

Looking back, the CRTD has had successful ten years of basic research and great accomplishments in the field of translation – applying research findings to clinical applications: “The CRTD is an important location for excellent research and practiced cosmopolitanism in Saxony. Researchers from many different countries here at TU Dresden are translating the medical hopes of many people into promising basic research that is then successfully transferred to clinical applications by the research laboratory. The Center for Regenerative Therapies contributes significantly to the Excellence status of TU Dresden. We also want to further build on this and ensure excellent research in Saxony,” says Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich.

Also TUD Rector Prof. Müller-Steinhagen emphasised CRTD’s role to position TU Dresden in the next phase of the Excellence Initiative: “I am delighted for our university that the Prime Minister has, by visiting the TUD’s CRTD, once again emphasised the commitment of the Free State of Saxony, to financially support the Excellence Cluster beyond 2017 and thereby help to establish a strong basis for the new application round.”

Founded in 2006, the DFG Research Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), Cluster of Excellence at the TU Dresden has now passed the third phase of the Excellence Initiative which aims to promote top-level research and improve the quality of German universities and research institutions. The goal of the CRTD is to explore the human body's regenerative potential and to develop completely new, regenerative therapies for hitherto incurable diseases. The key areas of research include haematology and immunology, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and bone regeneration. At present, eight professors and ten group leaders are working at the CRTD – integrated into an interdisciplinary network of 87 members at seven different institutions within Dresden. In addition, 21 partners from industry are supporting the network. The synergies in the network allow for a fast translation of results from basic research to clinical applications.
