The Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP carries out research and development activities in the field of nondestructive testing processes along the entire materials value chain. For customers in the automobile, aerospace, rail, energy, construction and agriculture industries, the institute offers a wide range of NDT expertise and technologies. At the 19th World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing, our engineers present a practical guide concerning modeling and simulation of ultrasonic testing by the sub-committee ‚Modeling and Imaging’ within the DGZfP Committee of Experts on UT.
In nondestructive testing and evaluation, simulation techniques are gaining increasing importance. On the basis of appropriate models, these techniques are very useful for understanding complex wave propagation phenomena, for the optimization of inspection parameters and for the interpretation of experimental results. However, in many cases it is difficult to find – out of the vast variety of available approaches - the method which is most suitable for the respective inspection problem under concern.
The Sub-Committee of Experts ‚Modeling and Imaging‘ is therefore addressing the task to outline the current status in UT modeling in a clearly-arranged and concise guide. The document is intending to help potential users of simulation techniques to select appropriate methods in view the underlying inspection situation. The practical guide provides answers to the following questions: How efficient are the various techniques? Which general conditions have to be obeyed? Who is offering modeling solutions?
Via excerpts and examples this contribution provides respective information about the structure and the contents of the guide, which comprehensibly describes the various techniques and illustrates their application by means of reference solutions.
