Professor Klaus Hulek is new editor-in-chief of zbMATH

    Karlsruhe, June 2016 – The editors and partners of zbMATH (formerly “Zentralblatt für Mathe-matik”), FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institute for Information Infrastructure, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Mathematical Society, and the publisher Springer, have appointed Prof. Klaus Hulek new editor-in-chief.

    Professor Hulek succeeds Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Gert-Martin Greuel. Professor Greuel significantly contributed to turning zbMATH into a world-class information service for mathematical research and to firmly anchoring it within the mathematical community.

    “As a mathematician with a strong publication record, Prof. Hulek understands well the value of information services such as zbMATH, and thus he has a well-founded motivation to develop zbMATH further according to the needs of the mathematics community”, says Prof. Pavel Exner, President of the European Mathematical Society.

    Professor Hulek has been using zbMATH for a long time within the scope of his research activities. He considers the information service an indispensable tool for mathematical research, due to its unique completeness, topicality, and user-friendliness. During the years spent as Vice President for Research at Leibniz University, Hannover, he gained a broad range of experience in science policy and also has excellent connections to the European scientific community from his former work as a representative of the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) in the Research Policy Working Group of the European University Association (EUA).

    Founded as a printed reviewing journal in 1931, Zentralblatt became the core part of the European information infrastructure for mathematicians under its former editors-in-chief Prof. Wegner and Prof. Greuel and thanks to the committed editorial team in Berlin. During the past years the features of zbMATH were systematically and significantly enhanced. The database now contains more than 3.5 million records, from the beginnings (1766) to the latest publications and author information. More than 100,000 publications are added each year. Thus, the information service has again increased its appeal and importance for scientists.

    Prof. Hulek is convinced that providing sophisticated retrieval technologies still offers excellent opportunities for the further enhancement of zbMATH. For example, he would like to expand the successfully started author identification feature and the references of citations. zbMATH has significant advantages compared to other databases, for example, the innovative information system for mathematical software swMATH that is connected to it. “With swMATH, zbMATH offers a unique tool for referencing mathematical software and its applications in mathematical publications. zbMATH plays a leading role in this field“, explains Prof. Hulek. “Other challenges we have to face are the connection with research data and the growing importance of non-printed media“.

    The editors of zbMATH are pleased that they could win over Prof. Hulek for the position of editor-in-chief.
