Your bachelor’s degree is finally in sight – but where do you go from here? Are you raring to get you’re your career started, or are you thinking of getting a master’s degree first? The University of Bayreuth offers 47 attractive master’s programmes. In addition, five new programmes of study along with a new supplemental programme (with an elite certificate) are set to launch in Winter Semester 2016/17. What’s more: all our new programmes of study have an international focus and are taught in English. Applications are now being accepted.
“International and interdisciplinary – both aspects have been a part of the University of Bayreuth’s strategy since its founding. The new master’s programmes we will be offering as of Winter Semester 2016/17 are English-taught, internationally oriented, and interdisclinary. On the one hand, we are hoping to attract talented students to Bayreuth to later serve as a base for recruiting our junior scholars. On the other hand, our new programmes are a response to the challenges of globalization and an increasingly international labour market,” University President Prof. Dr. Leible explained. “We also hope that developing our range of English-taught programmes will help ensure that we remain an attractive partner for international scholars and higher education institutions.”

An overview of the new programmes (in alphabetical order):
Biofabrication M.Sc.
A 3D-printed ear based on spider silk – sounds like science fiction? Not at the University of Bayreuth. Researchers here are investigating the properties of spider silk, which has five times the tensile strength of steel yet is just as elastic as rubber. It is also biocompatible, hypoallergenic, and has been shown to help heal wounds. In addition, it is contributing to technological progress in medical technology. For example, spider silk has enabled entirely new methods of regenerating heart muscle tissue, skin tissue, and nerve tissue. This is just one example of the topics students investigate in the master’s programme Biofabrication, which will prepare you for a demanding, ethically responsible career as an engineer working at the intersection of medicine and technology.

Development Studies M.A.
Processes of development, change, and globalization in Latin America, Asia, and Africa are gaining more and more global significance. The interdisciplinary master’s programme Development Studies addresses the causes, circumstances, and effects of such processes. Students have the opportunity to investigate “development” from different perspectives, to combine different methodological and theoretical approaches, and to explore relationships between social, political, economic, and spatial considerations. They also hone their ability to analyse development problems and processes of global and local change, to discuss them in consideration of theories in economics and the social sciences, and to apply them in a course project.

Environmental Chemistry M.Sc.
Forest decline, the ozone hole, greenhouse gas emissions, and coral bleaching are all prime examples of global environmental problems that have resulted from increased industrialization and depletion of natural resources. These are the kind of environmental problems students tackle in the new master’s programme Environmental Chemistry. Our students examine causes and effects and develop new solution approaches. Environmental chemists are already in high demand, and the demand for highly qualified experts in environmental chemistry will continue to grow with increased industrialization and ever‐tighter global interdependence and integration. The result: environmental chemists have excellent job opportunities worldwide!

Environmental Geography M.Sc.
Environmental changes at any measurement scale, from global to local, are crucially important to the basis of life on our planet. In addition to climate change, the major challenges of our times include changes in biodiversity, soil degradation, and increases in mass movements. In physical geography – as an interdisciplinary field with a marked focus on the interrelationships between society and the environment – examining and classifying such forms of climate change plays a central role. The unbroken trend of global environmental change and resulting fields of activity that have opened up at the local and regional levels ensure long-term demand for graduates of the degree programme Environmental Geography in both academia and society at large.

History & Economics M.A.
In Germany and even more so in other countries, the field of economic history has experienced an unexpected revival in recent years. This subfield of economics has received a great deal of public attention due to the global economic crisis, and interest is increasing among young people, in particular. More and more experts will be needed to analyse the complex interrelationships and develop integrative approaches. The objective is to arrive at solutions on the basis of historical understanding. History & Economics offers you an interdisciplinary education in the subject areas history and economics that is currently one-of-a-kind in Germany. The combination of history and economics gives graduates a career-qualifying degree that prepares them for a career in the private sector or for a doctorate in the increasingly important research field of economic history.

Biological Physics (supplemental programme in the Elite Network of Bavaria)
Molecular biology investigates the elementary processes of life – the biochemical processes in cells and the activities of the genes that control them. Physics is the fundamental science that makes natural phenomena quantifiable. The methods used in physics hold the key to solving the central question we will have to face in the future. The programme Biological Physics in the Elite Network of Bavaria brings together these two disciplines, thereby accommodating the rapidly increasing importance of work carried out at the interface between biology and physics. From generating energy via light-gathering processes to understanding intracellular transport and organization phenomena, Biological Physics puts its students in a position to get involved in leading research in some highly relevant fields. This new programme at the University of Bayreuth complements the material covered in the master’s programmes “Biochemistry & Molecular Biology” and “Physics” in the form of a supplemental programme. The objective of the programme is to prepare students for doctoral research and to enable them to carry it out at the University of Bayreuth.
