Conclusion of the Greatest European Real Estate Conference in Regensburg

Alexander Schlaak Referat II/2, Kommunikation
Universität Regensburg

450 participants from 50 countries – Brexit, Bubbles und Africa – honoring Karl-Werner Schulte on the occasion of his 70th birthday

Over four days, the largest European real estate research conference took place at the IREBS International Real Estate Business School of the University of Regensburg. From 8th to 11th June, at the 23rd Annual conference of the European Real Estate Society (ERES), in over 300 presentations and panels, 450 participants from over fifty countries discussed both current academic and practical real estate issues. Topics included the impact of the Brexit on national real estate markets and the development of real estate bubbles worldwide. The Africa sessions constituted a further focus of attention, with the investment potential of this continent being analyzed from an academic perspective. The ERES 2016 concluded on Saturday with the 12th IREBS Real Estate Symposium, which was dedicated this year to celebrating the 70th birthday of Professor Karl-Werner Schulte, HonRICS.

Steffen Sebastian, Professor of Real Estate Financing at IREBS summed up the discussion as follows: “The British real estate market will lose attractiveness due to the Brexit. By contract, the demand and prices in German could even rise further, even though the Brexit will in fact raise the level of risk throughout Europe”.

In a different vein, Wolfgang Schäfers, Professor of Real Estate Management at IREBS commented on his former doctoral supervisor: “Karl-Werner Schulte is not only the doyen of German real estate academia, but also, through his commitment to Africa, he has proven that his creative drive remains unbroken”. The already highly decorated “birthday boy”, who, at the Symposium received yet another three international awards, observed: “As a developing continent, Africa offers distinctly attractive investment potential for risk-friendly investors”.

Professor Ion Anghel, President of ERES: “With this conference, IREBS has set new standards which will determine the work of ERES for years to come. ” Practitioners too were impressed with the international variety and the quality of presentations. Martin Brühl, CEO of Union Investment Real Estate and World President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS): “The many challenges confronting the real estate industry can best be tackled jointly at both the theoretical and practical levels. The discussion on ‘Best Practice’ at this annual conference has provided the ideal framework, and a very inspiring one at that”.
