The development of greases is a technically complex and time consuming process. Typically, there are several iterative development cycles with repeated examinations necessary, which increases the cost with each cycle. Common release tests for the determination of the grease´s stability are expensive and time consuming. Simple and yet reliable stability tests do not exist so far. With the support of the German Society for Petroleum and Coal Science and Technology, the Oel-Waerme-Institut and the Kompetenzzentrum Tribologie at the University Mannheim are doing research in the field of screening method development.
The innovative methods may be used to characterize greases and additives faster and less expensive than using existing test methods. The test method for fundamental grease development is based on the combination of existing thermooxidative test methods with the application-oriented mechanic-dynamical rolling bearing test in the multi station rolling bearing test rig.
This method bears the potential to decrease the run time of the test cycles, which enables an improved determination of the grease lifetime. The prediction of the lifetime is very important for the manufacturers of grease lubricated roller bearings as it often depends on the grease operating lifetime, if re-lubrication is not possible or foreseen. It also poses a high cost risk, since the failure of a roller bearing could lead to a total damage of a complete technical system.
Due to the lower financial risk during grease development with the new method, small and medium-sized enterprises would be able to launch innovative products in the field of minimum quantity and special application. For standard applications, chemical-thermooxidative measurements could generate a sufficient statement about the suitability of the grease for certain applications. Expensive and time consuming roller bearing tests would be only necessary in individual cases or for release tests.
