Today, Franziska Broer assumes her role as the new Managing Director of the Helmholtz Association. She succeeds Rolf Zettl, who retired from office on 1 March this year. Ms Broer was unanimously elected by members of the Helmholtz Association at the general assembly in late January. She previously held the role of Administrative Director at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research.

“I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to gain such a dynamic and competent individual as Franziska Broer for the role of Managing Director of the Helmholtz Association,” said President of the Helmholtz Association Otmar D. Wiestler, explaining that Ms Broer brings outstanding specialist expertise to this challenging position and possesses thorough, long-term knowledge of the Helmholtz Association. “This profile is particularly important in light of the new strategic direction that the Association is currently developing with its members and representatives from government, which will be presented to the Senate in autumn for final approval,” says Wiestler.

Franziska Broer studied economics and law at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau. In addition, she obtained a degree in Consumer Health Care from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Following her studies, she worked at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch in the Helmholtz Association as personal assistant to the Administrative Directorate. Shortly afterwards, she also assumed the role of head of the Controlling unit. She began working at the Helmholtz Association’s Head Office in 2007 as head of Controlling, going on to assume the additional role of head of Administration in early 2011. She became Administrative Director at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research on 1 January 2014.
