Today, Eduard Arzt is giving this year’s distinguished Soo lecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. Every year UIUC, one of the leading materials science departments in the US, is honoring a well known scientist by this outstanding lecture invitation.
Arzt is the nineteenth Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo distinguished Lecturer and the first from outside the United States. He will be talking about bioinspired patterned surfaces and the simulation-guided develoment of new functionalities. With his participation, Arzt is succeeding prominent material scientists, such as Huajian Gao and Lambert B. Freund (both Brown University, Rhode Island, USA) as well as Mildred S. Dresselhaus (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Massachusetts, USA).
The scientific director and chairman summarizes work conducted at INM on the understanding and exploitation of bioinspired polymeric features to create mechanically active surfaces. He elucidates, both experimentally and theoretically, the adhesion enhancement by micropatterning of polymeric surfaces and demonstrates the radically improved understanding of the effects of feature size, aspect ratio, and shape. The adhesion based on Van der Waals interactions is reversible, residue-free, works in vacuum and can be switched between an adhesive and a non-adhesive state. More recently, emphasis is placed on the mechanics of contact to soft objects such as tissue and skin. These developments have led to INM's Gecomer® technology which is currently being marketed for applications in sectors such diverse as robotics, microelectronics and biomedicine.
The annual Soo lecture was established in 1992 by Professor Shao Lee Soo and his wife, Hermia. Professor and Mrs. Soo wanted to perpetuate the memory of his mother, Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo (1899-1991). She steadfastly believed that the way for the family to serve the people is through the education of its children.
