HHL Energy Conference, which took place in Leipzig on November 3 and 4, 2016, focused on digital solutions for industrial energy efficiency. Lucrative case study competition by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.

On November 3 and 4, 2016, a total of 50 students from 20 universities from six European countries discussed the latest trends in the energy industry with representatives from the economy and politics at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. The HHL Energy Conference, which is unique in Germany, focuses on digital solutions for industrial energy efficiency. In addition to panel discussions and presentations by experts, the event also included networking opportunities and a case study competition.
Nine teams of four to six students participated in the competition with monetary prizes of EUR 2,500, EUR 1,000 and EUR 500 for the first three places. A mixed team of students from the Technical Universities in Munich and Darmstadt eventually won.

The organizer of the case study competition, Roland Berger consultant Sebastian Preiß, was pleased with the conference which represents a special occasion every year for his firm to exchange views with students who are passionate about energy on a professional and personal level. "Together, we examine major topics for the future of the industry every year and develop approaches for tomorrow's energy supply," explained Preiß. Conference attendee Mike Wiemann, a student from TU Dortmund and board member of the Essener Energie Club, said, "This year's HHL Energy Conference was a complete success. I particularly enjoyed the interesting presentations about the latest issues from the energy sector and the ambitious case study competition." HHL students and main organizers, Thorben Weiß and Sarah Wieske, summed up the conference on a positive note as well, commenting, "HHL not only offers us the opportunity to expand our knowledge and skills on a professional level but also to establish our own personal networks in activities through various student initiatives."

Focus on "Digital Solutions for Industrial Energy Efficiency"

Digitalization is one of the trends defining the move into a new age for the energy sector. At the same time, energy efficiency plays a crucial role in light of climate change and various sustainability goals. Digital solutions can increase the efficiency of the energy supply and consumption significantly. This raises the question of the security of digital data when implementing these technologies of the future. The speakers at this year's HHL Energy Conference have shared and discussed their views and the experience of their businesses with the changes and challenges with the attending students.

HHL Energy Club organizes the HHL Energy Conference

The HHL Energy Conference is organized by students who are currently completing an MBA or M.Sc. program at HHL and who have created an initiative never seen before in Germany by establishing the HHL Energy Club. Only a very small number of international schools (e.g., Harvard, Wharton, MIT and INSEAD) have already established an Energy Club, which in most cases was founded by students and collaborates with regional and national energy companies. Organizing the HHL Energy Conference represents the core activity of the HHL Energy Club. The energy industry, also represented by a cluster of the City of Leipzig, offers numerous opportunities to start careers and establish businesses. Therefore, the founding of the HHL Energy Club also provides impetus for the development of the region. This particularly applies with regard to Leipzig's desire to become one of Europe's prominent energy metropolises.
