HHL Awards Honorary Doctorate to Peter Drucker Researcher Joseph A. Maciariello

Honoring accomplishments in the development of management theory as a liberal art according to Peter Drucker, the father of modern-day management

Prof. Joseph A. Maciariello, Ph.D., Marie Rankin Clarke Professor of Social Science and Management Emeritus and Senior Fellow at Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, received an honorary doctorate from HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management today. Maciariello is considered to be one of the foremost Drucker researchers worldwide. Being his friend, he also had the task of re-publishing Drucker's magnum opus. Maciariello is considered Drucker's only co-author. The scientist recently attracted much attention with his book "Drucker's Lost Art of Management". In it, he and Karen Linkletter analyze the history of ideas influencing Drucker's way of thinking which represent the foundation for the latter's concept of management as a liberal art. With Prof. Maciariello, Germany's first business school confers the honorary doctorate on an internationally recognized scientist who "has distinguished himself by his outstanding commitment to rigor and relevance in management theory and the connection of effective management and ethically responsible leadership" according to HHL Dean Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart. In his laudation for HHL's new honorary doctor, Dr. Richard Straub, President of the Peter Drucker Society Europe, of which HHL is a member, commented, "As the legitimate successor of Peter Drucker, Joe puts the focus on the human being and his values at the core of management – not only on the periphery. He counters the tendency of management degenerating into a mere social technology to achieve performance in organized entities. Prof. Maciariello’s work repositions management as noble calling – as a vital role in society and as a moral force. "

The honoree himself stated with his great inherent humility, "The honorary doctorate is recognition for the work I am doing to advance the legacy of Peter Drucker. This work is a calling in my life and at least in that respect is related, in a secondary way, to the primary calling of Peter Drucker's life. It is recognition not an earned degree.”

HHL's Prof. Dr. Timo Meynhardt added, "Prof. Maciariello's work perfectly reflects HHL's mission of responsible, effective and entrepreneurial leadership. Moreover, his work is also based on the assumption of management as a social function, according to which companies have the important task of integrating the individual into society."
