MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Prof. Dr. Adnan Al-Arbid, 58, is the first Philipp Schwartz Fellow at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Starting January 1, 2017, Prof. Dr. Adnan Al-Arbid, 58, will conduct research at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. He is being enabled to do so by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. A total of 39 host institutions were chosen from 59 German universities and research institutions that have expressed willingness to take in one or more threatened researchers and applied for the project by submitting concepts for how to integrate the researchers on both a personal and scientific level. Prof. Dr. Al-Arbid is no stranger to HHL. Between 1983 and 1989, the economist studied at Handelshochschule Leipzig (HHL); first receiving his Diplom degree, then completing a doctoral program. Since 1996, Prof. Dr. Al-Arbid has held an Economics professorship at Tishreen University in Latakia, Syria's third largest university. Over the next two years, he will examine aspects of the fundamental development of economic sciences at HHL.

HHL Dean Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart says, "We are looking forward to working with Professor Al-Arbid and are very grateful to be able to offer a safe place to live and work to a threatened researcher from Syria thanks to the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. This complements the various ways to support refugees which are coordinated at HHL by the Voice of Hope initiative."

    About the Philipp Schwartz Initiative

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative was jointly developed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office. It receives financial support from the foundations Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Stiftung, Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, Gerda Henkel Stiftung, Klaus Tschira Stiftung, Robert Bosch Stiftung as well as Stiftung Mercator. The initiative is named after the pathology professor Philipp Schwartz who was of Jewish descent. He was forced to flee Germany to escape the Nazis in 1933 and founded the "Notgemeinschaft Deutscher Wissenschaftler im Ausland (Emergency Association of German Scientists Abroad). In addition to fellowships, the initiative also provides funds to create structures in the host institutions as well as conferences to exchange experiences and to network with each other. For this purpose, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation works closely with international partners such as Scholars at Risk Network (SAR), the Scholar Rescue Fund and the Council for At-Risk Academics. http://bit.ly/PhilippSchwartz
