Federal President Joachim Gauck has appointed Prof. Marina Münkler, Professor for German Medieval and Renaissance Literature and Culture at TU Dresden, as a new member of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat).
The Council is one of the leading science policy advisory bodies in Germany. It produces recommendations for the Federal Government and the governments of the German Länder (Federal States) on all questions related to content and structural development of science, research and higher education.
Marina Münkler's research covers topics related to the experiences of otherness, communications and narratives of risk. Her 2016 book „The new Germans: A country confronting its future“ (German title: “Die neuen Deutschen. Ein Land vor seiner Zukunft”), co-published with her husband, Prof. Herfried Münkler, drew wide media attention and triggered multifarious debates.
Another Dresden-based scientist, Prof. Jan Michael Rost, Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems Dresden, was appointed to the German Council of Science and Humanities. Prof. Rost holds the Honorary Chair of Theoretical Quantum Dynamics at TU Dresden.
