The Chemnitz University of Technology is the best founding university in Saxony

Dipl.-Ing. Mario Steinebach Pressestelle
Technische Universität Chemnitz

According to the “Gründungsradar 2016” the Chemnitz University still counts to the best founding universities in Germany – compared to 2012, the university is attested an even higher “spirit of format"

The Chemnitz University of Technology is according to the “Gründungsradar 2016” the best founding university and at the same time Nr.1 when it comes to spin-off companies of all public universities in Saxony. Furthermore, the Chemnitz University is among the TOP 10 of Germany’s medium sized universities. The Donor’s Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany in cooperation with the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation carried the investigation out on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The analyzed the success rate in the creation of a vivid founding culture at 194 public and state-approved universities. Activities in the fields of founding anchoring, founding sensitization, founding support and founding activities were evaluated. The ranking included small, medium sized and large universities. Taking a look at the results of all 194 investigated universities, the Chemnitz University of Technology reached the highest overall score in regard to universities in Saxony and is at the same time the best founding university in the Free State. Of all 67 medium sized universities in Germany with a number of students between 5,000 and 15,000, the Chemnitz University ranked fifth.

“This very positive result emphasizes the excellent performance of the Chemnitz University of Technology not only in Research and Teaching but also in Transfer and shows that the manifold efforts are worthwhile in the support of spin-off companies by researchers, current or former students from our university”, says Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, Rector of the Chemnitz University. In all four of the “Gründungsradar” investigated fields the Chemnitz University of Technology was able to stabilize or even improve its excellent performance in comparison to the investigation of 2012. “Company foundations are and must remain an important tool for the transfer of technologies coming from our university, especially into the region”, Prof. Dr. Uwe Götze, Vice President for Transfer and Academic Qualification at the Chemnitz University, adds. He continues: “In the future we want to further develop the founding culture in cooperation with our networking partners in this area and were therefore added with interest this criteria into the target agreement of our university with the Free State of Saxony.” The Rector of the university emphasizes: “The excellent result of the Chemnitz University of Technology is also prove for the successful support of spin-off companies from universities by the federal and state governments”. The EXIST program of the Federal Ministry of Economy also made an important contribution, too.

A significant contribution to the success of the Chemnitz University of Technology came also from the Free State supported founding network SAXEED, which supervised 540 founding projects from 2006 till the end of 2016 in Chemnitz alone. “More than 140 foundings generated over 400 new jobs, including 70 technology oriented companies with great growth potential”, Dr. Markus Braun, SAXEED Director, evaluates. Almost 9,000 participants used the teaching and qualification offer of SAXEED in the last ten years. SAXEED cooperates with the Junior Professorship Entrepreneurship in Business Creation and Succession Management, endowed by the Sparkasse Chemnitz in June 2013, at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Chemnitz University of Technology.

“We will analyze in detail the results of the current “Gründungsradar” in order to evaluate further potential for our work”, Götze ensures. In the future, it is important to further inspire all faculties of the Chemnitz University in spin-off companies, to take up on topics such as industry 4.0, and to be able to offer all individuals interested in founding a company a high-qualitative and broad field of support and consult in cooperation with external actors.
