Strengh in research: BAM at the 2017 Hannover Fair

    Berlin, 10/04/2017. The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) presents innovative research on energy transition, the safety of infrastructures and materials at the 2017 Hannover Fair. BAM shows strength in research through seven exhibitions in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials and analytical sciences.
    "At the Hannover Fair, BAM demonstrates its important contribution to the safety of products, processes and the environment through innovative projects," says BAM’s President Prof. Ulrich Panne. "This makes BAM a key contributor to the competitiveness of the German economy."

    BAM’s stand in Research & Technology Hall 2 Stand A02 provides visitors with an exciting insight into the work of a departmental research institute.

    Safe operation of offshore wind turbines
    The exhibit on the focus area of energy shows BAM's research on the safe operation of offshore wind turbines which form an important strategic pillar of the energy transition. Based on a model turbine, BAM scientists show the latest findings and methods in the field of damage detection and establishment of maintenance and repair needs that are efficient even in the high seas. BAM’s research results and expertise are also included in the approval test for offshore wind turbines.

    Safety in transport and the use of energy sources
    In the focus area of infrastructure, BAM shows how fibre-optic sensors can be used to detect early damage to pipelines. Another exhibit illustrates studies on the use of liquefied gas as a fuel for heavy goods transport. Special attention is paid to the safety of tunnels, in particular regarding the safety of persons and structures as well as the transport of dangerous goods.

    RFID sensors for safe bridges and structures
    In the focus area of analytical sciences, BAM demonstrates how RFID sensors can be used to continuously monitor of the condition of bridges and other structures. By permanently embedding sensors in reinforced concrete components, corrosive damage and necessary repairs will be determined more quickly and cost-effectively in future.

    Unique test methods: microplastics, corrosion protection and drop tests
    A new and so far unique method for measuring microplastics in the environment is presented by the exhibit in the focus area of the environment. BAM has developed a method that enables the detection of the environmental impact by microplastics much faster than before. The research results are intended to help the legislature in carrying out better risk assessment and developing avoidance strategies.

    The focus area of materials shows BAM’s know-how and technology transfer in the field of corrosion protection. The KorroPad process patented by BAM enables the quick and destruction-free testing of stainless steel even by laypersons. This prevents safety problems caused by defective materials prior to their further processing.

    In the focus area of analytical sciences, BAM shows its unique position in special test methods. A test rig for controlled drop tests, including a versatile measuring technology, enables dynamic and individually adjustable tests for understanding the behaviour of materials. Impressive video sequences from extreme tests show crash, bending and compression tests of varying material and component combinations such as hybrid batteries or underside guards of lorries.
