Joint BAM, BfR and UBA Press Release
Berlin/Dessau-Roßlau, 22.08.2017. Together with the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the German Environment Agency (UBA), the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), will provide information about careers in departmental research to German scientists in the US at the Annual Convention of the German Academic International Network (GAIN) in San Francisco from 25 to 27 August 2017.
With over 400 participants, the GAIN Annual Convention is one of the most important events outside Europe for academic careers in Germany. GAIN is a joint initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service and the German Research Foundation. In addition to conferences and workshops, the three-day event includes a talent fair to promote careers and offers young German academics in North America a platform for networking with high-ranking representatives from German science, politics and industry.
The research organisations, which belong to three different federal ministries, will provide information and advice to interested people about various job opportunities at their booth at the GAIN talent fair. They also offer a joint workshop on careers in departmental research.
"We are once again looking forward to attending such an important career event this year," said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Panne, BAM President and Chairman of the WG Departmental Research. "Germany needs young, innovative scientists and departmental research institutes offer attractive and long-term career prospects." BAM supports scientists through targeted programmes for Ph.D. students and post-docs and the Adolf Martens Fellowship Programme.
BfR also maintains similar funding programmes for Ph.D. students and post-docs. Offering leading positions in the form of joint appointments between BfR and universities is another strategic instrument to strengthen cooperation with universities in research and to attract junior scientists.
"The German Government’s scientific organisations need scientific expertise at the highest international level for their research and work in risk assessment and to provide advice to politicians," adds BfR President Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel who will speak about departmental research at the joint workshop.
As member organisations of the WG Departmental Research BAM, BfR and UBA offer practical and interdisciplinary research at the interface to politics, business and society. Current issues are addressed in national and international networks with universities, other research institutes and companies. This creates attractive and diverse career opportunities.
