Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
vom 2. bis zum 6. September findet in Prag der internationale Kongress "Pain in Europe IV" statt. 3.000 Europäische Schmerzspezialisten treffen sich dort auf Einladung der European Federation of the IASP Chapters, EFIC (IASP - International Association for the Study of Pain, deutsche Sektion ist die Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Studium des Schmerzes e. V., DGSS). Ihr Anliegen ist es, das Augenmerk von Politik und Gesellschaft auf internationaler Ebene auf das Problem akuter und chronischer Schmerzen zu richten und zu erreichen, dass chronischer Schmerz als eigenständiges Krankheitsbild anerkannt wird. Die DGSS unterstützt dieses Vorhaben. Obwohl bis zu 50 Prozent der Europäer von Schmerz betroffen sind, ist die Versorgung von Schmerzpatienten noch immer unzureichend. Im Namen von EFIC lade ich Sie herzlich ein zur Auftakt-Pressekonferenz, die am 1. September 2003 um 10.30 Uhr live im Internet übertragen wird.

EUROPE'S EXPERTS DEMAND THAT GOVERNMENTS, HEALTH MINISTRIES, PHYSICIANS AND PATIENTS RECOGNISE CHRONIC PAIN AS A DISEASE IN ITS OWN RIGHT

Pain affects up to 50% of the European population yet the management of chronic pain by health services and physicians is unsatisfactory and pain remains in a clinical 'wilderness'.
On September 2nd around 3,000 pain experts and allied healthcare professionals will join Europe's leading pain Federation, EFIC (the European Federation of the IASP Chapters, IASP - the International Association for the Study of Pain) in its demand that Europe, its Governments, Health Ministries and physicians recognize the significance of chronic pain to the lives of European citizens. There is an urgent need to take the epidemic of chronic pain seriously, to identify priorities, create training programmes and build systems capable of dealing with the millions of sufferers who face this disease every day.
EFIC will also launch a new patient booklet aimed at aiding sufferers by providing accessible knowledge about their condition and helping them demand their rights to the specialized treatment options that they deserve.
The booklet has been translated into 15 European languages and will be further translated into the other languages of Europe, and the World. IASP will also announce plans to extend its successful European Week Against Pain to a global perspective.
The launch and explanation of these new initiatives will be amongst the highpoints of EFIC's flagship congress 'Pain in Europe IV' where over 170 distinguished speakers and researchers will present the very latest advances on acute and chronic pain, and avenues for their treatment.
Speaking at the media conference, accessible by logging onto the webcast, will be:
·Professor Harald Breivik, MD, DMSc, FRCA, President, EFIC who will open the conference, and provide insight into the significant scientific advances that will be presented during 'Pain in Europe IV'
·Professor Sir Michael Bond, MD, who will announce plans to extend the successful European Week Against Pain to global proportions. Among the aims of this new initiative are to broaden understanding about acute and chronic pain and their management. Chronic pain must be viewed as a major healthcare priority, a disease in its own right.
·Professor David Niv, MD, Immediate Past President, EFIC, Chairman of the Committee on Public Awareness, who will present EFIC's new booklet for pain patients. This booklet, alongside other EFIC initiatives, is designed to help raise awareness of the impact of chronic pain
·Ms. Mandy Leighton, a patient who has suffered personally from chronic pain, who will speak about the impact that the experience has had on her life, including issues that she has faced in the pursuit of appropriate treatment
·Professor Serdar Erdine, President Elect, EFIC who will challenge European Governments, Health Ministries, physicians and patients to take the action required to ensure that chronic pain gets the attention it deserves.
