TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is a reliable partner when it comes to digital preservation
HANNOVER, 18 December 2017 – Digital information has become an integral part of daily life – encompassing not only digital photos and videos, but also digital library holdings, electronic PhD theses, research data and 3D objects. All this information needs to be collected, made accessible and preserved for future generations: TIB guarantees all these activities with its digital archives, which have now been certified with the nestor Seal. The Seal awarded by the competence network for digital preservation confirms the trustworthiness of the digital archives operated by TIB.
Outstanding work in the field of digital preservation
TIB is the fourth institution in the world to receive this certification. Two nestor assessors tested a total of 34 criteria, including not only technical readability, the preservation measures taken and the interpretability of the research objects, but also aspects such as funding, personnel resources, IT security and the organisational and legal framework conditions. The result: nestor has awarded TIB its nestor Seal for trustworthy digital archives for the digital archives it operates for the collection groups grey literature, German research reports, PhD theses completed at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Open Access commercial publications and objects in Leibniz Universität Hannover Institutional Repository. “The certification confirms the high-quality work undertaken at TIB and the transparent processes applied in digital preservation, and emphasises the pioneering role the library plays,” stated Thomas Bähr, Head of Preservation and Digital Preservation at TIB.
TIB is a reliable partner in digital preservation
TIB offers a variety of services in the context of digital preservation: from consultation on the delivery and transfer of the objects to be preserved to their enrichment with metadata and their archiving, as well as preservation measures. TIB’s services are aimed at scientists, teaching staff, students, employees of non-university research institutions and commercial research. “The nestor certification demonstrates that TIB is a reliable partner when it comes to digital preservation. After serving the first pilot customers, we now aim to acquire additional customers for our services,” explained Professor Dr. Sören Auer, Director of TIB.
The nestor Seal is TIB’s second certification for its digital archives, having already been awarded the Data Seal of Approval.
Digital preservation at TIB
TIB operates, hosts and administers the digital preservation system and makes it accessible to its two partners ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics and ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences for cooperative use. The system deploys the Rosetta software program by the company Ex Libris. The digital documents and metadata of TIB and its partners are fed into the long-term digital archives, and monitored. Together with its partners, TIB has established cooperative agreements concerning the use and operation of the digital preservation system.
