In the winter semester of 2017/2018 ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research is continuing its series of “ISOE-Lectures”. The topic of the coming lecture is the role of social ecology in the USA and within the international discourse on global social-ecological challenges. If complex problems such as climate change can no longer be tackled in a disciplinary way, how can social ecology with its transdisciplinary approach contribute to solutions? The American scientist Daniel Stokols will talk about the advantages of an integrative science – for a better understanding of the complex relationships between people, societies and nature.
Humankind is confronted with a multitude of complex challenges: from global climate change, environmental pollution and cybercrime to poverty, food insecurity or the threat of nuclear war. In the age of the Anthropocene, digital technologies have dramatically changed people’s relationships with their environment and have increased complexity. Disciplinary scientific approaches alone can no longer adequately describe pressing problems. With its transdisciplinary approach, on the other hand, social ecology offers a perspective to better understand and mitigate the sustainability problems of the 21st century. In the upcoming ISOE-Lecture, American scientist Daniel Stokols will trace the history of this socially oriented science and he is going to explain the meaning of social ecology in present-day USA. In this context, he will point out the connections to international discourses on global change research and will discuss the methodological and conceptual instruments for integrative science.
Daniel Stokols is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Social Behavior and Urban Planning and Public Order at the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine, where he was founding dean and director of the Social Ecology Program. Stokols’s research work includes the topic areas of social ecology, environmental psychology, urban planning, epidemiology and public health.
Since 2012, the ISOE-Lectures have in the winter semesters been dealing with current issues of sustainability research. The series aims to provide students and scientists as well as the interested public with food for thought on how to succeed in transitioning to sustainable development and on what role universities and science can play in this process.
The lecture by Daniel Stokols will be held in English.
