SYSTEMS INTEGRATION presented developments and potentials in the digitalization of the industry

Adding digital aid and concepts to traditional production processes in order to enable a more effective, less time consuming and less expensive production is the declared goal of SMEs in the high-tech component industry. At the “Systems Integration” conference, presented by the IVAM Microtechnology Network, held in Alpnach at the Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique SA CSEM last January, manufacturers and users of microtechnology and MEMS were discussing the digitalization and the effects on the automation of the production and development of new products.

An automated production and quality control can not only be beneficiary towards avoiding mistakes, but also increase customer satisfaction. Two presentation sessions, “Industrial Automation” and “Innovative Production Processes”, showed the latest status in the introduction of IT based solutions.

CSEM is one of the largest research institutes in Switzerland with various locations, where mainly mircoelectonical and microtechnical solutions are developed with partners in the industry. Philipp Schmid, Head of the robotics and automation division, introduced the latest developments in production automation and quality control: especially self-learning systems are more and more used for difficult measuring tasks. This was confirmed by Dr. Thomas Fries, CEO at FRT GmbH, in his presentation about automated control in MEMS fabrication. The FRT devices in the “MicroProf” series are using more and more “deep learning” concepts, too.

The automated quality control is playing a big role outside the productions halls as well, according to Dr. Ingo Nee from ROSEN Technology and Research Center GmbH, presenting an example of a pipeline inspection. With this new digital concepts, lot sizes of 1 can be produced economically and quickly, as Stefan Stebner from Maxon Motor GmbH showed in his presentation. Roger Schelbert, CEO of AUROVIS AG explained that there are already facilities and Industrie 4.0 automation concepts available for production with maximum flexibility and process security. Therefore new concepts and high-tech components are still necessary, such as decentralized energy supply like energy harvesting (Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung e.V.), precise vacuum die bonding (Finetech GmbH & Co. KG) or MEMS scanner mirrors for potential application in robotics (Fraunhofer IPMS).

Another important new product group consists of flexible and printed MEMS parts. Various examples were given in the presentations of Christine Kallmayer from Fraunhofer IZM and Christine Harendt from IMS CHIPS. The digitalization has created the need for printed products, and automation makes the production of said products possible, explained Dr. Sören Fricke from the CSEM.

The Systems Integration is a conference series held by the IVAM Microtechnology Network since 2008 regularly with different partners and key topics in different European countries. The conference in 2018 was the launch of a series of conferences and workshops by IVAM that will help SMEs to use the possibilities of digitalization effectively and get to know the necessary experts in that field. The next opportunity to do so will be the IVAM High-Tech-Summit on April 19, 2018 in Dortmund addressing “New Developments for a Digital World”.
