Prof. Dr. Ahmed Karim strengthens the Department of Psychology at Jacobs University Bremen. The internationally renowned brain researcher and psychotherapist has investigated in many studies which brain changes take place in learning processes and mental disorders and how neuropsychiatric disorders can be treated.

Karim studied psychology and neuropsychiatry in Berlin and Oxford and holds a PhD in neuroscience from the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen. He is a research group leader and lecturer at the University Hospital for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Tübingen. He joined Jacobs as a Professor this month.

Karim's pioneering achievements include the development of the first brain-computer interface that enables completely paralyzed patients to use the internet and the development of innovative therapies for mental and neurological disorders in combination with electromagnetic brain stimulation, as well as the investigation of brain processes involved in lying and moral decisions.

He has published his research work in high-ranking international journals, for which he has received several awards, including the Baden-Württemberg State Graduate Fund, The Tursky Award for Excellence in Psychophysiology Research" and “The 2013 Young Investigator Award of the European Brain and Behavioral Society”. In addition, Karim is committed to the promotion of people with a migration background and has organized several projects in cooperation with the integration commissioners of Reutlingen and Tübingen.

"Professor Karim's work shows, among other things, that new technological achievements can also help us to better understand human actions," says Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas, Dean of Jacobs University. "His knowledge as a brain researcher and psychologist is an important asset for our university - and we look forward to working with him.”

Karim describes his work at Jacobs University as a "very inspiring experience, because of the highly gifted international students from all over the world who can study psychology and neuroscience bilingually in English and in German here, and with our professors' impressive expertise in order to execute internationally renowned research. Karim: "At Jacobs University you can directly experience that diversity and ethnic diversity can be a valuable resource".
