At the 10th World Health Summit, representatives from the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration and cooperation in global health. The two kicked off the partnership with the announcement that a group of LSHTM researchers is to be based at the Charité to establish the initial stages of the partnership and identify joint research opportunities.
LSHTM provides research-led educational programmes to future health leaders, managers and researchers across the world on key global health challenges. With more than 4,000 postgraduate students and 3,000 staff working in more than 100 countries, the institution is committed to making an impact where it is most needed. Director of LSHTM Peter Piot said: “We are a global institution and with its visibility, its long and outstanding research history and its most recent activities in global health, the Charité is a perfect partner for us.”
Dean of the Charité Axel R. Pries added: “We welcome this new partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, one of the world’s leading centers for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. It will bring new opportunities in research and teaching.”
The LSHTM researchers will be based at the Charité’s Institute of Virology, which is part of the new Charité Global Health center. “We look forward to collaborating with our LSHTM colleagues, who will bring new perspectives,” commented Christian Drosten, who is both the institute’s director and the Scientific Director at Charité Global Health. “Together we’ll develop new research ideas and projects!”
Johanna Hanefeld, Associate Professor in Health Policy and Systems Research, is to be the LSHTM lead academic in Berlin. She said: “This is a very important time for global health, with Germany taking a leading role politically and the academic field rapidly developing. We look forward to deepening our research collaborations with German and European universities.“
