The passing-of-the-baton ceremony for the double anniversary 2018-2019 commemorating "800 Years Rostock/600 Years the University of Rostock" will take place on 12 November 2018, the University’s 599th anniversary. Professor Wolfgang Schareck, Rector of the University of Rostock, today announced the highlights of the coming anniversary year at the oldest alma mater in the Baltic Sea region. The anniversary programme of the venerable university will feature the history, the present and above all the future of Rostock as a location of scholarship. The Rostock academic community will highlight its innovative work in research and teaching and the strengths of the "campus city" at the Baltic Sea.

"In a joint creative process, the students, professors and staff of the University of Rostock have prepared an anniversary programme inviting everyone to participate and celebrate," said the Rector. "All residents of Rostock and guests from all over the world are cordially invited to actively experience the University anniversary with a varied programme, numerous events and exciting encounters.

Five event highlights for the anniversary
In addition to many small and large-scale events for all age groups and a broad spectrum of initiatives from the nine university faculties, five main events will mark the anniversary year. "In the public festival programme, we have purposely planned five event highlights to reflect the international and academic profile of our university," said Schareck. "These are the exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Rostock and the Rostock Cultural History Museum, the two-day summer festival on University Square, the music theatre project "Dead End for Cornelius R." and the Academic Festival on the occasion of our 600th birthday. For the passing-of-the-baton ceremony next week on 12 November, the University will publish a programme brochure that will be distributed or can be ordered free of charge," said the Rector. "In addition, in the anniversary year 2019, we look forward to outstanding conferences and distinguished visitors. The German Rectors' Conference, the German Research Foundation and the Science Council will be guests at the University of Rostock. The anniversary year represents a unique opportunity for us to shine the international spotlight on our university and sharpen our profile for the challenges of the future," said Schareck.

Overview of the five main events
    Journey into the future
In the multimedia exhibition "Experiment Future" from 23 March to 5 May 2019, more than 20 artworks will be shown thematising the future of scientific research. Art and science will meet in the inspirational space of the Kunsthalle Rostock and explore future scenarios that are reflected in artistic positions, installations, sculptures, collages, and video and action art. The field of tension between them will stimulate public discussion in accompanying events and promises to offer suggestions, new perspectives and insights. "Experiment Future" is the first institutional art and science exhibition of this scale in Germany.

    Traces of the past
From June to November 2019, the exhibition "People – Knowledge – Paths of Life" in the Cultural History Museum will present the 600 eventful years of Rostock's university and academic history. On more than 800 m², the treasures of the University and loans from elsewhere in Germany and abroad will be shown. Above all, the exhibition will present biographies of present and past students, teachers and staff, as well as a whole new look at famous and unknown people who have left their mark on the history of the almost 600-year-old university.

    A “Sommerfest” for everyone
A city festival with incredible atmosphere and a weekend full of highlights await the guests on 22-23 June, when the University celebrates its 600th anniversary with a summer festival. Here performing artists and artists from the Rostock arts and crafts scene will present themselves on and near the anniversary stage in front of the main building of the university. Under the motto "A Stage for Rostock", up-and-coming artists can also apply for a short appearance on the anniversary stage. On Sunday, a festival concert "Classic Meets Picnic" by the Rostock Free Student Orchestra and a children's festival are planned on the University Square.

    An opera for the anniversary
The world premiere of an opera at the Rostock University of Music and Drama on 2 November 2019 about the student Cornelius Relegatus is one of the highlights of the 600th anniversary celebration of the University of Rostock. At the same time, the Rostock University of Music and Drama is celebrating its 25th anniversary next year. The opera is based on the theatre comedy "Cornelius Relegatus", which premiered in Rostock in 1600. The original version by Albert Wichegreve satirically shows the career of the young student Cornelius Relegatus, with many surprising twists. The renowned composer Sven Daigger and the music theatre dramaturg Sahra Grahneis were chosen for the artistic realisation of the ambitious joint music theatre project.

    Festive climax and finale
On five days, 8 – 12 November 2019, the University of Rostock will celebrate its 600th anniversary with the City and many guests from Germany and abroad. On Saturday, 9 November 2019, the University is inviting all former students and plans a large alumni gathering with a “Frühschoppen” in the student cellar, show- lectures and a festive anniversary ball. Other highlights of the celebrations for the 600th anniversary on 12 November will be the procession through the city centre of Rostock and the subsequent academic ceremony in St. Mary's Church.
