Two female scientists and four male scientists from three locations of the Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces” are among the world’s most highly cited researchers in 2018.
Highly cited means publications that belong to the one percent top cited in their field in the year in which they were published. Only scientists who are involved in several highly cited papers are accepted into the circle of Highly Cited Researchers. In the current assessment, this circle includes around 6,000 people in 21 categories around the world. The “Cross Field” category is new this year, which takes interdisciplinary papers into account. Researchers with a considerable influence on several fields over the past decade are named in this category. These include four members of the Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces": Prof. Lars Bertram, Prof. Dr Jeanette Erdmann, Prof. Dr Andre Franke and Prof. Dr Inke König. Prof. Dr Stefan Niemann is a Highly Cited Researcher in the “Microbiology” category and Cluster spokesperson Prof. Dr Stefan Schreiber was named in the “Molecular Biology and Genetics” category.
The basis for the assessment by Clarivate Analytics (previously Thomson Reuters) is the Web of Science database, which lists scientific articles from around 34,000 journals. With a total of 356 successful scientists, Germany finds itself in 4th place for science locations, behind the USA, Great Britain and China. For the 2018 assessment, the period from 2006 to 2016 was taken as a basis and separately assessed according to 21 specialist fields.

Andre Franke is a professor at Kiel University and Director of the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB). He is a Steering Committee member of the Cluster, a Schleswig-Holstein Excellence Chair and head of the Genetics and Bioinformatics working group at the IKMB. His field of expertise is the bioinformational evaluation of data collected via high throughput methods in order to explain chronic inflammatory diseases. Lars Bertram is a professor at the University of Lübeck (UzL) and head of the interdisciplinary platform for genome analysis at the Institute of Neurogenetics. His expertise lies in mapping and characterising disease genes for complex diseases, mainly in the field of neuro-psychiatric diseases and ageing. Jeanette Erdmann is a professor at the DZHK - German Centre for Cardiovascular Research and Director of the Institute for Cardiogenetics at the University of Lübeck. She is a Steering Committee member of the Cluster and has been researching the genetic causes of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases for almost 20 years. Stefan Niemann is a professor at the University of Lübeck and head of the Molecular and Experimental Mycobacteriology priority research area at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center. He is a Steering Committee member of the Cluster and is researching towards a better understanding and therefore better treatment of tuberculosis. The Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces" has been funded since 2007 by the Excellence Initiative of the German Government and the federal states with a total budget of 68 million Euros, ending in 2018. In 2019, it continues with a new research orientation, and funding through the Excellence Strategy. The aim of the new Cluster of Excellence “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation” (PMI) is to draw on the multifaceted research approach to chronic inflammatory diseases of barrier organs, and transfer this interdisciplinarity more to healthcare. Around 300 members from eight institutes at four locations are involved: Kiel (Kiel University, University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Muthesius University, Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN)), Lübeck (University of Lübeck, UKSH), Plön (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology) and Borstel (Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center).
