The University Medical Center Mainz and the Mainz Max Planck Institute for Chemistry present reevaluation of health risks from polluted air
At the end of last year, researchers from the European Environment Agency sounded the alarm: the main reason for premature deaths in Europe is the consequence of air pollution. One of the most serious cause of cardiovascular deaths is particulate matter. Now a team of scientists headed by Prof. dr. Jos Lelieveld of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Director of Cardiology I in the Center for Cardiology of the University Medical Center Mainz Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Münzel investigate that the effects of air pollution reduce the average life expectancy of Europeans by 2.2 years and that causes of death predominantly affect cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the study results that will be published in the European Heart Journal are well above the recent calculations by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) on the effects of polluted air.
