Award for Dini Adyasari, PhD student at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Research Marine (ZMT) and the University of Bremen, to be bestowed at the annual meeting of the German Geological Society in Münster at the end of September

For promising and original geoscientific research at the start of her career a young scientist from the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) will be awarded the Bernd Rendel Prize 2019 by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Dini Adyasari, doctoral student at ZMT and the University of Bremen, will receive 2,000 euros from the Bernd Rendel Foundation, which is administered by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. The prize will be awarded during the annual conference of the German Geological Society - Geological Association from 22 to 25 September 2019 in Münster.

Dini Adyasari comes from Indonesia where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the Teknologi Bandung Institute in 2010. For her Master of Science in Environmental Technology she studied at the University of Stavanger, Norway. She wrote her master's thesis on the purification of sewage plant water using innovative filtration techniques. Since 2015, the thirty-year-old has been working as a doctoral student in the working group ‘Submarine Groundwater Discharge’ at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and will be finishing her PhD at the University of Bremen this year.

Supported by a DAAD scholarship and a guest stay at the University of Alabama, Dini Advasari has expanded her scientific knowledge in the field of coastal groundwater discharge. For her PhD thesis she is investigating “Urban Pollution of Submarine Groundwater Discharge from Jepara Coastal Region and its Implications for Local Water Management”. Dini Adyasari has already published as first author in the prestigious journal "Science of the Total Environment"; other topics of her publications include submarine groundwater discharge, nutrient fluxes and their reactions, and microbiology in groundwater discharge.

Since 2002, the DFG awards the annual Bernd Rendel Prize to graduates in Geosciences who have not yet completed their PhD. The prize money for scientific purposes such as participation in international congresses and conferences is administered by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. The family of the late geology student Bernd Rendel established the foundation in his memory.
