High level of expertise:
American Diabetes Association (ADA) cites Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW) Bad Oeynhausen as exemplary
Every 80 seconds, a person with diabetes is admitted to hospital with heart disease somewhere in America. Every 19 minutes, a person with diabetes has a heart attack somewhere in Germany. Of all patients with heart failure, 75% have a glucose metabolic disturbance. This shows that the treatment of diabetes and the treatment of heart disease need to go hand in hand. A joint initiative by the ADA and the AHA (American Heart Association) called "Know diabetes by heart" is now drawing attention to this.
In their worldwide search for internationally renowned partners from science and medicine, those at the ADA responsible for looking in Germany have identified the HDZ NRW, a research hospital of the Ruhr-University of Bochum, as highly commendable. According to the ADA, its bundling of research and cross-discipline cooperation in the field of "diabetes and the heart" is exemplary. Professor Diethelm Tschöpe is a certified international expert in this field. The film highlights research results and treatment concepts at the interface between metabolic and vascular medicine. The close link between clinical research and basic research is a key theme. Current investigations include research into the involvement of reactive glucose metabolites in the development of a diabetic cardiomyopathy.
The film is entitled "From metabolic failure to hemodynamic failure" and reflects current treatment, from early to terminal heart failure. The message is: "For all stages of the disease and all degrees of severity, there are medical options available. But the prerequisite for therapeutic success is always that treatment is commenced as soon as possible and that it is agreed between the various disciplines", explains Professor Tschöpe in discussion with his fellow Clinic Directors.
The film premiered at the annual congress of the ADA, which took place in San Francisco, California from 7-11 June 2019. The ADA is renowned worldwide as a leading platform for research and therapy in diabetology.
